Lions barbecue all about disabled children

Kilgore Lions Club members Thursday were focused on the Texas Lions Camp.

Ben House, a member of Longview Lions Club, is chairman of the Texas Lions Barbecue. The barbecue dinner to benefit the camp for handicapped children will be held March 27. House discussed the approaching event with local Lions this week.

This year, besides barbecue tickets for $6 per person -- which includes brisket, sausage, beans, potato salad and a drink -- the Lions are offering a fully cooked brisket, seven to nine pounds, for $25.

Bodacious Bar-B-Q will cook the meal. Tickets may be purchased at the door or from any Lions Club member. Anyone wishing to buy a brisket must purchase that ticket by March 15. Those tickets are also available from any Lions Club member.

The importance of this fundraiser is not about a great barbecue dinner for a great price said Kilgore Lion Tom King, it’s about raising money to support a camp where disabled children and children with diabetes will have a place to go to summer camp.

Larry Bennett, a Judson Lions member, spoke about a project to make the Texas Lions Camp even better.

Bennett said this project will be for Lions’ clubs in the 2X2 district only, something to put their name on, a Frontier Village. “This camp site will be on the highest point of the camp, providing an outdoor camping experience for the childre even if the weather is bad,” said Bennett.

This project is in the planning stages and more details will be released as it progresses, but if things go as planned, the projectcould be a reality as early as next spring, said Bennett.

The village will be a replica of a western town, made of wood, steel and concrete, but with an open air feel said Bennett.

Bennett said there are 45 clubs in District 2X2 and he hopes to get each involved in some way in the building of this project.
