Can a 9-year-old achieve herculean status

YOUR HEALTH DR. DONOHUE
DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My husband, a gym rat (his words, not mine), wants to start our 9- year-old son weightlifting. I think this is dangerous and foolish. As far as I can tell, the boy hasn't begun puberty, and I know testosterone is necessary for muscle development. I also wonder about the damage to bones and muscles from too early a start in weightlifting. Please tell me your thoughts.

Re-Can a 9-year-old achieve

Re-Can a 9-year-old achieve herculean status: I also think there needs to be an emphasis on proper technique before load. Regardless if the child is male or female 9 or 19 proper I think proper technique is most important. As soon as the child is comfortable with the technique then I beleive you can start to load them. Again I beleive teaching proper technique will not only make them stronger it will develop a good system for later when they can lift "heavy". Also I beleive they need to have proper recovery as well.
