Hopson jumps parties, switches to Republican
      JACKSONVILLE — Saying that President Barack Obama and the Democrats in Congress do not reflect the concerns and conservative values of his district, State Rep. Chuck Hopson announced Friday that he has formally resigned from the Democratic Party and will join the Republican Party.

Flags at half staff to honor those killed at Fort Hood
      Flags at city, state and federal offices have been lowered to half staff in tribute to the soldiers and civilians killed and wounded in a murderous rampage at Fort Hood near Killeen on Thursday. Jeff Howell, city manager, and Chuck Maxwell, Kilgore postmaster, said flags on their respective properties were lowered Friday morning.

Kilgore Scouts food drive to begin on Nov. 14
      A tradition that has been going on in Kilgore for more then 20 years will return this month as Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts will conduct their annual food drive across the city. Carolyn Holcombe, Cubmaster of Pack 251, said food bags will be distributed throughout Kilgore on Saturday, Nov. 14, and the bags will be picked up the following Saturday, Nov. 21.

Still time to enter Overton/New London Christmas Parade
      Several have already signed up and all are invited to join the lineup for the Overton New London Area Chamber of Commerce Christmas Parade, set for 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 30, in downtown Overton. Mary Pat Eaves, chamber secretary, said organizations, churches and businesses are welcomed and there is no cost to enter.

Veteran speaks to Rotary to honor veterans
      Dale Sistrunk, local school board member and an Air Force veteran of 23 years, was the guest speaker for the Kilgore Rotary Club on Wednesday. Sistrunk spoke on behalf of all veterans as the club honored its veterans a week early since the group will not meet on Veterans Day, which is Wednesday.

Kilgore’s Main Street earns national honor
      Kilgore’s Main Street program has earned national honors for the third year in a row. The Texas Historical Commission and the National Trust for Historic Preservation have recognized Kilgore as one of the 56 National Main Street Cities in Texas.

Roberts and Hatchett Properties expands holdings in Kilgore
      The company that owns Gateway Travel Plaza on Hwy. 42 at I-20 has expanded its holdings with the recent acquisition of the Exxon gas station and mini-mart across the street. Dr. Jerry Ted Roberts, one of the owners of Roberts and Hatchett Properties, said the acquisition of the 5-acre property, located at 4312 Hwy. 42 North, occurred on Oct. 15.
