Mustangs blow out Cross Roads in ’09 finale

By JOE JONES Special to the News Herald

CROSS ROADS — It was a season largely of frustration for the Overton High School Mustangs, but at least they finished it well.

Overton defeated homestanding Cross Roads 48-17, getting a huge win in the season finale for both teams.

The Mustangs finished the season with a 3-7 overall record, but broke a fourgame losing streak with this win.

After a failed fourthdown conversion by Cross Roads at midfield, Telvin Darden scored for Overton on a 56-yard run. The twopoint conversion by Darden failed, but Overton took the early lead.

In the second quarter, Austin McCasland returned a kick to his own 38-yardline. Darden got past the Cross Roads defense again, this time for a 62-yard scoring run. Again the conversion failed, but the Mustangs led 12-0.

Still in the second frame, Cross Roads fumbled the ball on their own 14, and Overton recovered. On the ensuing first down, Overton’s John Michael Florey scored on a 14-yard run, and the Mustangs had built a three-touchdown lead. This time, Darden got the two points, and the Mustangs led 20-0.

Just before the half, things would get worse for Cross Roads. Overton’s Casey Rinehart intercepted a Chris Jenkins pass at the Overton 10. Rinehart would pick up a key first down later in the drive, and Peyton Crawford would score on a 12-yard quarterback keeper. McCasland got in for the conversion, and Overton led 28-10 at the break.

On the first play of the third quarter, Cross Roads fumbled once again and Overton recovered at the Cross Roads 29. A Cross Roads penalty set up Overton at the 11, and a couple of plays later, Rinehart scored from 5 yards out.

On the next Overton offensive possession, Florey and Darden were the workhorses, and Forest Lee would score on a 12-yard run.

Shelby Hughes recovered an onside kick for Overton, and after another big run by Lee, Tim Hawkins would end it on a 15-yard run.
