SHE’S GOT IT! — Leverett’s Chapel senior Jordan Corpier (center) gets down to make the save in a playoff game against Big Sandy earlier this week. LC lost in a close five-game match.
GLADEWATER — The Leverett’s Chapel Lady Lions finished their volleyball season Tuesday night in an ultraclose first round playoff loss to the Big Sandy Lady Cats.
LC, which finishes with a 14-12 overall record (they were 6-4 in District 20-1A play), took Big Sandy to five games: 23-25, 25-12, 12-25, 25-22, 8-15.
Big Sandy advances to the area round, where they will face Cumby sometime this weekend.
“The girls played hard,” LC coach Julie Brown said. “Mentally, we beat ourselves. Big Sandy outplayed us and gave us a good game. Our girls needed to stay together and keep their heads up. We went back and forth, back and forth. We needed to stay at the top level.”
The Lady Lions were led by Jordan Corpier, who had 13 kills, five dinks and one ace on the night. Jessica Hernandez, just a freshman, had 11 kills. Tasha Roper had four, two aces, and one dink. Toni Taylor had four kills, four aces and a dig. Tabitha Baite had 33 assists, four aces, and three digs, and Amanda Harris had one kill, four digs, and four aces.
“The four seniors did a good job being leaders and keeping up the legacy of Leverett’s Chapel being in the playoffs,” Brown said. “They did what they needed to do. ...It was a good year and a good season. They all worked hard.”
