Kilgore College men win again

Now 2-0 on season; games that were scheduled for today canceled

GOOD START — Kilgore College head men’s basketball coach Brian Hoberecht (above, center) talks to his team during a time-out. The Rangers beat a club team from Stephen F. Austin University on Wednesday night here at Masters Gymnasium, and are now 2-0 on the season. Both KC teams were to host Shorter College today, but SC has closed, and those games have been canceled. A good, quick start is what Kilgore College men’s basketball coach Brian Hoberecht was likely hoping for, and that’s what he’s got.

The Rangers moved to 2-0 on the season Wednesday night with a 63-43 victory at home at Masters Gymnasium over a club team from Stephen F. Austin.

Chris Johnson, a sophomore from Canada and one of just a few players back from last year’s KC team, once again led the Rangers in scoring with 13 points. Markus Yarbrough and Dane Smith each scored nine, and Jonathan Phelps and Derron Hobbs had eight each.

Chris Angsomwine of Ghana had six points. William Johnson led the SFA team, and all scorers, with 20.

The Rangers get an unexpected off-day today; they had been scheduled to host Shorter College, along with coach Roy Thomas’ Lady Rangers, but KC has been notified that Shorter College is no longer open, according to KC’s Director of Media Relations, Chris Craddock.

Shorter College was located in North Little Rock, Ark.

That means Thomas’ Lady Rangers’ official season opener will be at Wagstaff Gymnasium next Thursday in the Tyler Classic, a 3 p.m. game against Ranger.

Hoberecht’s Rangers will have the weekend off, then play at Weatherford on Wednesday night. KC is back home next Friday, hosting the Comfort Suites Classic. The Rangers will play Arkansas Tech’s junior varsity team on Friday night, Nov. 13, at 7 p;.m., then face Ranger at 6 p.m. on Saturday.
