Flags at half staff to honor those killed at Fort Hood Flags at city, state and federal offices have been lowered to half staff in tribute to the soldiers and civilians killed and wounded in a murderous rampage at Fort Hood near Killeen on Thursday. Jeff Howell, city manager, and Chuck Maxwell, Kilgore postmaster, said flags on their respective properties were lowered Friday morning. The U.S. president and governor of Texas have asked that flags remain at half staff through Veterans Day on Wednesday. At press time Friday evening, 13 people had been reported dead and 38 wounded at the Texas military post. The lone suspect in the rampage, Army Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, was wounded and is in custody.
