COLLEGE FOOTBALL NOTEBOOK
GOTCHA! — Former Kilgore High School standout Wayne Daniels (96), now at TCU, makes a tackle against SMU earlier this season. Daniels and the Horned Frogs shut out UNLV, 41-0, last Saturday. TCU is ranked No. 6 in the BCS poll.
Former Kilgore High School football players were all in fairly important games over the last week, and largely on the good side of the results.
As you can read on page 12A, the Kilgore College Rangers, along with former Kilgore standouts Chase Fisher and Xavian Sanders, defeated Cisco, 27-10, to clinch a spot in the SWJCFC playoffs. KC will visit Navarro on Saturday, a 3 p.m. start, and with a win, the Rangers move on to the conference title game.
KC is going for its fifth win in six games.
Fisher is a quarterback for Kilgore College, and Sanders is a defensive back/ wide receiver.
Texas State University pulled a major upset last Saturday, getting a 28-7 win, a homecoming win, over 11thranked Stephen F. Austin University. Former KHS running back Frank Reddic, who has had some playing time as a true freshman over the course of the season, didn’t score, but had four carries for 7 yards.
Reddic wears No. 24. He and the Bobcats will visit Central Arkansas this Saturday, and are still very much alive in the race for the Southland Conference.
And the University of Texas, with four former Kilgore players on its roster, was very impressive last weekend, scoring a 41-14 win over No. 14 Oklahoma State, routing the Cowboys in Stillwater. For their performance, Texas moved up to No. 2 in the Bowl Championship Series standings, meaning if the Longhorns win out (which would include the Big 12 Championship game), they should play for the BCS national championship.
Kilgore’s Eddie Jones is a defensive end for the Longhorns, and had a tackle in the game. The UT defense created five turnovers, and allowed 277 yards.
On the opposite side of the ball, Kilgore’s Michael Huey started the game on the offensive line for the Longhorns, and Kilgore’s Britt Mitchell played as well. The Texas offense went 5-of-12 on third down conversions, got a good day from quarterback Colt McCoy, and dominated the game.
Dominique Jones, a freshman tight end/ defensive end at Texas, did not play. He wears No. 40.
Eddie Jones is No. 32 for Texas; Huey is 63, and Mitchell, 72. The Longhorns host Central Florida on Saturday.
While Texas just keeps on winning, so does Texas Christian University, where former Kilgore standouts Nick Sanders and Wayne Daniels play. Sanders, a cornerback, and Daniels, a defensive end, helped the Horned Frogs shut out UNLV, 41-0, last weekend, and the Frogs are now No. 6 in the BCS standings.
Daniels had four tackles, Sanders one. The TCU defense held UNLV to seven first downs, just 42 passing yards, and forced 11 punts.
The Horned Frogs will try to avoid the upset bug this weekend at San Diego State.
The Louisiana Tech Bulldogs couldn’t get out of Moscow, Idaho with a win last weekend, as Idaho came back on Lon Roberts and the Bulldogs, getting a 35-34 win.
Roberts, the starting center for Louisiana Tech, is a former KHS standout, and helped the Bulldogs to 29 first downs and 547 total yards. Roberts wears No. 60.
Another former Kilgore player, Vince Cano, is a freshman offensive lineman for La Tech, but didn’t play. Cano wears No. 69.
Tech will host a very big WAC game this Friday night, a 7 p.m. kickoff against Boise State, ranked in the top five in the BCS standings. The game will be televised nationally on ESPN2.
Still another former KHS player, Colby Rosen, is a freshman at Missouri Southern University. Rosen, a reserve offensive lineman, has not played yet this season and didn’t play in the Lions’ 27-17 loss last week to Central Missouri, in Warrensburg, Mo.
Rosen wears No. 50.
Missouri Southern finishes the season at home in Joplin, Mo., this week against Fort Hays.
Midwestern State, who has a former Kilgore player on its roster, defeated Eastern New Mexico last Saturday, 50-17.
Former KHS defensive end Shaun Edwards now suits up for the Midwestern State Mustangs, but did not play. He’s a true freshman.
Midwestern State is located in Wichita Falls, and the Mustangs are ranked ninth in the nation in the NCAA Division II poll. They’ve won three straight games.
