Trick or treat!

CHITCHAT CORNER LINDA K. BALLARD

THE PHONES RANG bright and early at the News Herald office on Friday morning as various follks called in to report how “unusually” dressed their employees were for Halloween. You can email your favorite Halloween pictures to bwoodall@kilgorenewsherald. com and then look at your ghostly gang online. Check out photos of local spooks at www.kilgorenewsherald. com.

HEAD OUT NOW to the Kilgore Lions Club Carnival starting at 6 p.m. for ghoulish fun. The annual carnival will be held at 307 N. Rusk St., downtown Kilgore.

Also, you might want to travel out of town to the Sabine Halloween Carnival at the Sabine Elementary School from 6 to 9 p.m.

If your trick-or-treaters want to start the day a little earlier as a safety measure, swing by Grace Baptist Church to attend the Hallelujah Halloween from 2 to 5 p.m. and follow up on the Helping Hands canned food drive at Forest Home Baptist Church’s Trunk-or-Treat beginning at 6 p.m.

GHOSTS AND GOBLINS may be out this evening, but last weekend a spiritual lift was found in Kilgore through the Christway Quartet. This group from Louisiana performed at Forest Home Baptist Church.

I cannot tell you how long it’s been since I’ve enjoyed gospel music as I did listening to these guys and, quite frankly, The Gaitlin Brothers need to be prepared to move over as they are coming on strong when it comes to singing. The group consists of Randy Baker, son of the Rev. Bill and Melba Baker of Overton, tenor; Darrell Henagan, baritone; Don Clark, lead and pianist; and Kevin Mothershed, bass.

The quartet inspired the congregation and friends throughout the evening with song, music, humor and praise. To share the gospel through their singing is their mission and they did a fabulous job.

KILGOREITE MARK FRIED, Forest Home minister of music, led the concert with a beginning solo and left mouths open at his performance. Pastor “Buddy” Duggins has asked for a repeat performance once the new worship center is completed. This group should easily fill the center with listeners. The projected opening date for that new center is March 2010.

From the Houston area were Joanne Lewis Kirkland and Billy Smith; from Angleton were Howard Hardy and friend, Charlie McGinty from Tyler, and J.B. Roberts (Class of 1950) from Beaumont.

WHAT’S THE LOWDOWN on The Peanut Butter Emporium? Well, there has been a facelift to a building near the Exxon service station in Overton that will house the muchloved peanut butter. Keith and Carrie Parsons have been seen scurrying to get the place ready before the holidays.

The business will be milling peanut butter as fast as the orders arrive, with the sandwich shop to open at a later date. Save room on your Santa Wish list for that delicious homemade stuff – it will be available real soon!
