Kilgore Boys and Girls Club gets $60,000 grant

Kilgore’s Boys and Girls Club hs received a sizable grant for “construction of recreational facilities.”

The club, located on Harris Street, will receive a $60,000 grant through the East Texas Council of Governments, which is administering funds for the U.S. Health and Human Services Commission under the Social Services Block Grant for Emergency Disaster Relief Funds for Hurricane Ike.

Attempts to contact club officials were unsuccessful Tuesday afternoon, so details the grant were not available.

According to an ETCOG news release, the SSBG funding is to provide a wide array of human services, including the provision of health care and of rebuilding needs to counties designed by the governor’s office as declared disaster areas. Those counties in East Texas include Anderson, Cherokee, Gregg, Harrison, Marion, Panola, Rusk, Smith and Upshur.

The money must be spent by Aug. 31, 2010.

The Longview Boys and Girls Club also received a $60,000 grant to rehabilitate recreational facilities.

Among the other grants: Gladewater will get almost $295,000 to make improvement to its new Weldon Bumblebee Park; East Texas Food Bank will get $108,316 to purchase a refrigerated truck; Jefferson will get $101,200 to make improvements to Lions Club Park; and the city of Rusk will get $161,809 for citywide debris and blight removal.
