IN 1909 President William H. Taft’s train stopped in Wills Point. The president, in his first year as president, gave a little speech but probably did not alight. Whether he dismounted the train or not, it was a proud moment in the town’s history and they’ve been waiting a long time to celebrate it.

NEXT Saturday, on Oct. 31, 150 people will board Amtrak in Longview and at 9:55 a.m. the train will stop in Wills Point. The locals will get off the train, bands will play, flags will fly and the person playing the

part of Taft will give excerpts from the speech he gave a century ago.

IF you look hard enough, every family has something to be proud of.

COLLEGE STUDENTS who talk on cell phones while walking are less than half as likely to notice clowns on unicycles.

THAT’S the conclusion of a study at Western Washington University.

RESEARCHERS commissioned clowns on unicycles to pedal around the Bellingham campus. They then asked the pedestrian students if they’d seen anything unusual. Those who were talking on cell phones said “no” more than twice as often as persons who weren’t on the phone.

THOSE who were walking in pairs and not talking on cell phones were the most likely to have noticed the clowns.

I’M not quite sure how I feel about global warming, but I know I’m darned tired of global raining.

AS of Thursday afternoon, when the most recent rain event ended, the National Weather Service folks at East Texas Regional Airport had recorded 7.68 inches of rain for the month. That compares to 2.87 in the first 22 days of an average October.

FOR the year, though, we’re still shy of 40 inches and less than two inches above normal.
