Hopefully it's not too little, too late, but the Kilgore High School Lady
Bulldogs picked up their second win of the district schedule Tuesday night,
perhaps the start of a win streak that will propel them to the Class 4A
playoffs for the second straight year.
Kilgore swept Jacksonville, 25-21, 25-12, 25-16, on Tuesday in Jacksonville,
their second win over Jacksonville as the second round of District 14-4A
play began. The Lady Bulldogs, though, have a 2-4 record in 14-4A, and with
just four games left, they'll have to likely win two more to get back to the
postseason.
Kilgore hosts Henderson on Friday afternoon, a 4:30 p.m. varsity start.
After that, the Lady 'Dogs host Nacogdoches on Tuesday night, visit
Whitehouse next Friday, then close out the regular season at home Lindale on
Tuesday night, Oct. 27.
Tuesday night at Jacksonville, Kilgore got 12 kills form Kelsey Jackson,
eight from LaQuasha Sheffield, three from Lesta Eaton, two from Dana Boyd
and one each from Becca Howard and Kandace Shackelford.
Howard also had six assists and an ace; Eaton had 16 assists, two aces and
11 consecutive serves in the second game of the night. Brianna Westbrook had
an ace, and Nikeyia Shackelford had 10 straight serves in the third and
final game.
Kilgore¹s freshmen won, as well, 25-18, 25-18, and the junior varsity also
won, 25-10, 25-10.
The Lady Bulldogs are coached by Lacy Thompson, in her third season.
Thompson, herself a former Lady Bulldog, helped KHS break a 16-year playoff
drought last year, even though they went on to lose in the first round to
former district rival Pine Tree.
Thompson is assisted by Cassie Newell and Amanda Farmer.
LC sweeps Timpson:
Kilgore wasn't the only local volleyball program to win
in a sweep. The Leverett¹s Chapel Lady Lions swept Timpson on Tuesday,
25-15, 25-22, 25-15.
The victory gives LC a 13-12 overall record, and they¹re now 4-3 in District
20-1A. Timpson is 8-13, and 2-5 in district play.
Leading ladies for the Lions were Jordan Corpier with 13 kills, four digs,
three aces and nine points; Jessica Hernandez with seven kills, a dig and a
block; Toni Taylor, who had one kill, three aces and two digs; Tabitha Batie
with 22 assists and an ace; Tiphany Baker with five digs; and Tasha Roper
with two aces, three digs and three kills.
"It was a good win," said coach Julie Brown. "The girls came together
finally. We were kind of crazy at the beginning, but we recovered like we're
supposed to, and we covered each other and made good passes. "...We played
like a team, like we are supposed to, and came out and took care of
business."
LC is scheduled to play at Beckville Saturday at 2 p.m.
