KILGOROUND

BRENDA BROWN

Rain, rain, go away!

If our copious precipit ation should subside by Thursday night, the Jazz Professors will perform at the World’s Richest Acre. If not... Look to the News Herald online to see if performance should have to be canceled.

Sponsored by the Kilgore Historical Preservation Association, the one-hour concert is, as always, free. The music begins at 6:30 p.m. under the derricks on North Commerce Street. Bring your lawn chair and enjoy.

Before you head off to hear great music, stop by St. Luke’s United Methodist Church for a bite to eat.

The United Methodist Men will host a Pancake/Sausage Supper from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the Family Center, 401 E. Main. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for children and $10 per family. Sounds like an excellent deal to me — and no dirty dishes to clean afterward!.

A UMM rep told us the money they make goes right

back into the community to local charities in December, when the group empties its bank account and starts all over again.

For desert this weekend, you’ll want to buy some Andrew’s Original Peanut, Pecan and/or Cashew Brittle, available Friday and Saturday during the CTK Crusaders Relay for Life Garage Sale at 1302 Spring Tree, off Danville Road. The sale is set for 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and 8 to noon on Saturday.

If you can’t make it then, call Mary Grush at 903-984-7737 or Eunice Evers at 903-983-1350 any time to purchase some brittle (as long as it lasts!).

“When you purchase a bucket of brittle, you are making a donation to the American Cancer Society and you are getting something in return!” Mary says. “That’s a ‘win-win’ situation with all proceeds going to ACS!”

Great news from Texas Attorney General’s Office: Prerecorded telemarketing calls for expiring car warranties, lower credit card rates and other solicitations are officially prohibited by the Federal Trade Commission. Yay! No more prerecorded commercial telemarketing calls — “robocalls” — to sell us something we don’t need or want.

However, calls from financial institutions, political candidates (of course), telephone carriers and most charitable organizations are okay, as are health care messages or debt collection calls as long as the caller is not trying to sell something.

Errant robocallers can be fined up to $16,000 per call. Texans who receive such calls may file complaints with the FTC at www.donotcall.gov or by calling 888-382- 1222; or with the AG’s office, www.texasattorneygeneral. gov or 800-252- 8011.
