After a murderer's-row first four weeks of the 2009 schedule that included three of the nation's highest-ranked teams, the Kilgore College Ranges picked up their first win of the season Saturday night in a rain-soaked R.E. St. John Memorial Stadium.
The Rangers delivered quite a birthday present for head coach J.J. Eckert, beating homecoming opponent Arkansas Baptist 28-0. KC (1-4) now turns its attention back to the Southwest Junior College Football Conference. They're 0-2 in conference play right now, but a hole they can still cliimb out of to make the conference playoffs. This Saturday, KC is back home to face Tyler Junior College.
TJC defeated KC 55-31 in a non-conference game earlier this year at Rose Stadium in Tyler, but in recent years, the team that won the non-conference game hasn't won the conference rematch.
TJC lost at home to top-ranked Blinn last Saturday, 60-31.
Saturday against Arkansas Baptist, the KC defense put together a masterful performance, holding ABC to just 13 yards rushing and 75 yards passing. Largely due to the rainy conditions, ABC fumbled the ball five times, only losing one; KC fumbled the ball away four times, also losing just one.
While the Arkansas Baptist offense struggled, the KC ground game thrived. The offensive line took control of the line of scrimmage and helped the Rangers pile up 223 rushing yards and a pair of touchdowns. KC had 71 plays on offense to ABC's 55.
The leader on the ground for the Rangers was Zavor Jones, a freshman. Jones had exactly 100 yards on 14 carries, the first back to pick up 100 yards in a game this year.
KC scored in the first quarter on a 10-yard pass from Si'Darius Blackshire, a freshman from Carthage, to Darius Perkins. David Bailey's extra point gave the Rangers a 7-0 lead with 7:15 left on the first-quarter clock. Blackshire would go on to finish 6-of-9 for 93 yards and the touchdown, one of three quarterbacks that would take the field for KC in the contest. Kilgore native Chase Fisher went 1-of-5 for 31 yards, and Hans Cook gave a gritty performance to finish out the game, going just 1-for-2 for 20 yards, but rushing for 40 yards and a score on 12 carries.
KC would get one more first-quarter score, and this one would be on defense. LeDerick Calico scooped up a loose ball that happened on a sack of ABC, and practically walked 6 yards into the end zone for a 14-0 lead.
The Rangers got a second-quarter rushing touchdown from Terrance Cannon that would send them to the half with a 21-0 advantage. The key play on the drive was a pass from Blackshire to Corrigan-Camden's Chase Ford for 23 yards. Ford would go on to lead the Rangers in receiving with 100 yards on four catches. Cannon finished with 83 yards rushing on 20 carries, and the touchdown.
Arguably the Rangers' most impressive drive so far this season was the fourth-quarter drive directed by Cook in a hard downpour of rain. Cook's 1-yard touchdown capped the 11-play, 63-yard drive, and Marty Hobbs tacked on the extra point to finish the scoring with about four minutes left to play.
