Overton opens district play by whipping Cushing, 28-6
HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL
Maybe all it took was one win to get the Overton High School football team going. The Mustangs, fresh off their first win of the season last week, cruised on Friday night, beating Cushing 28-6 in the first District 20- 1A game of the season at Coach Chester Roy Stadium in Overton. Coach Ty Robinson’s Mustangs (2-3 overall, 1-0 in district play) will be at Cayuga on Friday night, and they’re all district games from here on out. Overton’s ground game just couldn’t be slowed by Cushing on Friday. On a thirddown play on the Mustangs’ first possession of the game, John Michael Florey got by Cushing defenders for am 18-yard touchdown, the first of four by the home team. The extra point was missed, but OHS led 6-0. On the Mustangs’ third possession of the game, Florey would score again, this time from 7 yards out, and after a two-point conversion run by Shelton Rogers, Overton led 14-0, the score at the half. The Mustangs’ defense stopped Cushing on a key fourth down play in the third quarter, taking over at their own 34-yard-line. And the end zone wasn’t far away. Florey scored just a couple of plays later on a 61-yard run, his third score of the night. Senior quarterback Peyton Crawford completed a pass to Scott Osburn for the conversion, and OHS led 22- 0. The Mustangs would get one more score, a 53-yard run by Casey Rinehart. The kick was missed, but the message was sent: Overton 28, Cushing 0. Cushing did score with four minutes left in the game, however.
