KILGOROUND KHPF'S Third Thursday in the Patch next features delightful local singers Debbie Dane and John Whitehead with Mark Fried. IT'S free, it's fun and it's at the World's Richest Acre Park, Thursday, Sept. 17, at 7:30 p.m. +++ JUST WHEN YOU thought only the internet offered reliable, up-tothe minute weather forecast, AEP-SWEPCO sends out a reminder about its weather service. YOUR electric company - unless you're a member of Rusk County Electric, or Upshur County Electric, or some such - has provided a telephone weather forecasting service for Longview and Kilgore since 1995. IT'S one of those oldtimey things: "dial" 903- 234-1000 for time, temperature and weather. +++ IF Kilgore city crews are your city crews, then your guys are awfully busy right now. DOWNTOWN'S a mess, for sure, but the street and water departments are repairing and replacing lines and pavement all over town. JUST try to get around over in the neighborhood around Roy, Redbud and Clay streets. +++ A WEEK or so back, we saw almost the complete works of William Shakespeare - in an hour and a half. THE Reduced Shakespeare Company (theater students from Trinity Valley Community College) performed The Complete (Abridged) Works of Shakespeare (Parodied) at Kiepersol Estates in Bullard. (See Chapter 1: How to Use More Parentheses, by B Woodall.) THEY skipped a bit here and there, but it was an entertaining show. The costume changes alone, especially during Hamlet, left even the audience struggling for breath. +++ AS IT turns out, thin thighs may not be what you really want. SOME doctors from Denmark studied a bunch of patients for 12 years. During that time, those patients with thighs more than 24 inches in circumference had the best shot at surviving. Those whose thighs were between 18 and 24 inches were taking their chances. Those with thighs less than 18 inches were (in addition to looking unhealthy) twice as likely to die. BUT it's a near thing - those same researchers found that women with waists over 35 inches and men with a waist of more than 40 were at greater risk for heart disease and diabetes. SO, mind your waist but let those thighs rock. +++ Celebrating birthdays in the coming days are Webb Mosley, Jimmy Bessire, Lennie Allen, Peyton Bryant Carter, Joan Still Smith, Mike Woolridge, Carol Copeland, Robert Bagwell, Tino Tabares, Pam Mason, Brian Sims, Lola Turner, Tammy Coleman.
