Now playing on Saturdays

Former Ragin' Red standouts across Southern college football landscape

COLLEGE GAMEDAY — Kilgore High School has former players in college programs across the South, with four at Texas, including Eddie Jones (above, 32). Jones, Michael Huey and Britt Mitchell all helped the second-ranked 'Horns whip Louisiana-Monroe on Saturday, 59-20. If you watched any college football last weekend, you could have came across some former Kilgore High School players now in the collegiate ranks.

Michael Huey, Eddie Jones and Britt Mitchell played for No. 2 Texas against Louisiana-Monroe; Frank Reddic got some action, even as a freshman, for Texas State University (and scored a touchdown); Lon Roberts and Vince Cano and Louisiana Tech took on Auburn; and Coty Gatewood (Sam Houston State) was also in action.

Colby Rosen, the former offensive line standout for the Ragin' Red, is at Missouri Southern, which had the weekend off. Shaun Edwards plays at Midwestern State, which defeated Southeastern Oklahoma on Saturday.

Two former KHS standouts — Nick Sanders and Wayne Daniels — still play for nationally-ranked Texas Christian University, which had an open date over the weekend, and a trio of former Kilgore players — Chase Fisher, Joe Colbert and Xavian Sanders — play here at Kilgore College, but were also off.

The football weekend began last week with Gatewood, the former Ragin' Red defensive tackle, helping Sam Houston State in its season opener at home against Western Illinois. The Bearkats, who play in Huntsville, lost their opener to Western, 35-28. Gatewood had a tackle in the contest.

Reddic told the News Herald after playing in the Texas High School Coaches Association's All-Star Game this summer that he wasn't sure still if he would play this year at TSU, or be redshirted. That mystery was solved Saturday when the former Bulldog was put in the lineup. Reddic and Texas State were facing the Angelo State Rams, and won, 48- 28. Frank had a 6-yard touchdown in the rout. The win also elevated the Bobcats to 19th in the national FCS poll.

Reddic and the Bobcats have an open date this week, and will step up and face Sanders, Daniels and TCU in Fort Worth on Sept. 19. TCU plays at Virginia on Saturday. Reddic wears No. 24 for Texas State, located in San Marcos. Texas State had another former Bulldog — that's where Clint Toon, now on the KHS coaching staff, just finished his college ball.

Texas' "Kilgore connection," which also includes freshman Dominique Jones, defeated Louisiana-Monroe, 59-20.

Huey, a starter on the offensive line for the secondranked Longhorns, apparently sprained his ankle in the 'Horns' season opener against ULM last Saturday. The Austin American- Statesman reported he is day-to-day, and listed as out for this weekend's game at Wyoming. Mitchell didn't start but did play on the Oline for the Longhorns, who had a big offensive day.

Texas scored 38 points in the first half, had 33 first downs, 199 rushing yards, and 562 total yards of offense.

Defensively, Jones didn't start, but had a good day. He had a solo tackle and an assist, and a quarterback hurry that forced an incomplete pass in the second quarter. Huey also had a tackle when a teammate fumbled, and Huey made the tackle on the ULM player before the player could score (Huey's tackle came at the UT 8-yard-line). ULM, wound up having to kick a field goal on the possession.

Dominique Jones, a true freshman, didn't play in the game. Dominique has been working at tight end and defensive end.

Eddie Jones wears No. 32, Dominique Jones wears 40, and Huey No. 63, just as they did at KHS. Mitchell wears No. 72.

The former championship-winning teammate of those Bulldogs, Lon Roberts, was the starting center, as usual, for Louisiana Tech as the Bulldogs played at Auburn University on Saturday night. It didn't work out too well in the end: LA Tech lost to Auburn, 37-13, but Tech trailed by just three, 13- 10, at halftime.

The game was played in front of 81,000 people.

Roberts helped Tech pick up 19 first downs on the Auburn defense, and to get 245 total yards. Tech's offense actually held the ball longer than Auburn: Tech had a possession time of 31 minutes, 23 seconds to Auburn's 28 minutes, 37 seconds. The Bulldogs scored both times they entered the Auburn red zone.

Cano is a freshman who wears No. 69; he is also an offensive lineman. Roberts wears No. 60.

Tech visits Navy in Annapolis on Saturday.

Rosen and the Missouri Southern Lions were off last weekend after opening the season at Harding University in Arkansas on Saturday, Aug. 29. Missouri Southern dropped a close 17-15 season opener. Rosen didn't play in that game. He wears No. 50 for the Lions, who will play at Washburn in Topeka, Kan., on Saturday.

Edwards, a defensive end, now suits up for the Midwestern State University Mustangs, who beat Southeastern Oklahoma, 34-6, last Saturday. Edwards, a true freshman, didn't play. Midwestern hosts Northeastern State this Saturday.
