Coach Mike Vallery talks about Bulldog football season
      School is back, fall is rapidly approaching and this means football — Kilgore High School football, that is, and Mike Vallery, head coach for KHS was at the Lions on Thursday. Vallery spoke not only about football, but about numerous accomplishments by KHS students in all sports.

Rotary learns about East Texas Red Cross
      Two members of the East Texas Red Cross spoke to the Kilgore Rotary Club on Wednesday. Anne Brooks and Paula Prince were on hand to deliver words to the club, including some advice on how to stay heart healthy. Prince was first to speak.

One car accident killed Rusk County woman
      A Kilgore woman was killed in a one-vehicle accident Wednesday in Rusk County. According to published reports, Patsy Ann Mills, 53, of Kilgore, was reportedly killed after her pickup truck struck a culvert and overturned. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

East Texas Oil Museum stays open Labor Day weekend
      The East Texas Oil Museum will be open regular hours this Labor Day weekend - Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. The museum is open Tuesdays-Fridays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., closed on Mondays. Admission is $4 for children ages 3-11 and $6 for ages 12 and older.

Do you want to be in the Guinness Book of Records
      A local gymnastics teacher is looking to make Kilgoreites famous in the Guinness World Book of Records and she needs at least 99 helpers. Ada Wells, owner of Kilgore Acro Flyers, seeks at least 100 somewhat nimble people to come out on Saturday, Sept. 12, to break the Guinness record for "one simultaneous cartwheel.

Council spends two private hours with city manager
      Following more than two hours in closed session in which city councilmen discussed the city manager, the mayor emerged and told everyone to go home as the planned city parks work session was canceled.

Time for fall fertilization for home lawns
      Once again, the fall season has arrived in East Texas. Have you decided what type of fertilizer you are going to use on your lawn? KC to offer small business class
      The Kilgore College Small Business Development Center will offer the course, "How to Start and Operate a Business in East Texas" beginning Oct. 1. Classes will be held 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. each Thursday from Oct. 1 to Nov. 19 in Room 107 of the Hendrix Building at KCLongview.

New homestead exemption offers relief for disabled veterans
      Texas state government is doing the right thing by offering a new tax exemption to a group that truly deserves our respect: disabled U.S. military veterans. Veterans who meet the highest threshold of qualifications will be exempt from paying any property taxes on their homesteads. To qualify for a full exemption, veterans must be classified by the U.S.
