LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

To quote Thomas Payne:

"I believe in the equality of man, and I believe that religious duties consist in doing justice, loving mercy, and endeavoring to make our fellow-creatures happy."

I read with interest the front page article regarding Congressman Gohmert in my Wednesday edition of the Kilgore paper. I get it on Thursday, as it is has to be mailed. That's ok, as long as I get it.

Of special interest was the statement "he is a Christian politician representing a Christian district in a Christian nation." I wonder, what about folks in his district that may not be "Christian," does he represent them as well? By Christian I assume he means Baptist, Catholic, etc. Surely not people who are Buddhists, Unitarian, Jewish, or just nothing at all.

They don't believe in a higher deity. Does that mean they don't get represented. Believe it or not there are some good people that are not Christians, even in East Texas.

Of course this statement was made to a largely conservative audience of Republicans I'm sure. I can think of a few elected Christians that need to be held accountable for their political actions, namely the deaths of countless young Americans because of the blatant lies of our past administration. If some of them weren't Christian, would Mr. Gohmert have represented them?

I wonder if Jesus would have left thousands of men, women and children stranded for four days without food or water. While he watched from a helicopter? Let us do away with the hypocrisy please...

I happen to be a believer in the Holy Trinity. I pray for my family and our country every day. However, I also respect the rights of other Americans to worship as they please. Whether we like it or not, America is a diversified nation now. Many cultures, many religions, many beliefs and many races. That is what our President said "we are a diversified nation." Let's put it in the right perspective.

Past great Americans also realized this, that is why we have the 1st Amendment. It guarantees us that right. Freedom of worship, freedom of press, and freedom of speech!!!

"CONGRESS SHALL MAKE NO LAW RESPECTING AN ESTABLISHMENT OF RELIGION, OR PROHIBITING THE FREE EXERCISE THEREOF —"
