ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBAL?
     When you hear about the Kilgore High School Watermelon Fest, you know it's time for football to begin! The Kilgore Football Booster Club puts this event on each year, and President Tim Capps led the introductions. The varsity team emerged from "the helmet," with senior Ryan Bustin leading the way. Performances were by KHS cheerleaders, twirlers, flags and, of course, the Hi-Steppers. There were even little cheerleaders. Maude Laird Middle School was represented by cheerleaders and twirlers and the KHS Band played, led by band director Mitchell Smith. The season opens Thursday night, at home, with the freshman and JV teams taking on Carthage, starting at 5:30. The varsity opens its season at Carthage on Friday night at 7:30. But the fest would not be complete until the watermelon is eaten, and that is just what Landry Laird, 2, of Kilgore did. Landry is the son of Kynan and Jayanna Laird.

Genealogist discusses early law at August SAR meeting
      Chapter 57 of the Texas Sons of the American Revolution met at Johnny Cace's in Longview on Aug. 6. During the business meeting, Ray Jackson was inducted into the chapter as new member. Deborah Stiles, Longview police officer, was given the Law Enforcement Medal for outstanding service.

Senior Citizens welcome NASA scientist
      A NASA scientist was the guest speaker for the Kilgore Seniors Citizens Aug. 12 luncheon at the Lions Building. President Audrey Fulcher called the meeting to order at 11:30 a.m. and led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance. Ray Drost gave the opening prayer.

Brodi Bender celebrates first birthday with party
      Brodi Klaire Bender of Kilgore celebrated her first birthday with a "Princess" party at her home. She was born Aug. 20, 2008. Brodi is the daughter of Luther and Laurie Bender of Kilgore. Her grandparents are A.J. Bender of Turnertown and Mary "Paulette" Dunagan of Kilgore.

      "WE'VE NEVER TRIED THIS BEFORE," Monty McClurg said last week while discussing a new program for the Children's Church Worship - Kids Style at Highland Park Baptist Church. Uh-oh, was my first thought - they are going to use the kids as guinea pigs.
