When you hear about the Kilgore High School Watermelon Fest, you know it's time for football to begin! The Kilgore Football Booster Club puts this event on each year, and President Tim Capps led the introductions. The varsity team emerged from "the helmet," with senior Ryan Bustin leading the way. Performances were by KHS cheerleaders, twirlers, flags and, of course, the Hi-Steppers. There were even little cheerleaders. Maude Laird Middle School was represented by cheerleaders and twirlers and the KHS Band played, led by band director Mitchell Smith. The season opens Thursday night, at home, with the freshman and JV teams taking on Carthage, starting at 5:30. The varsity opens its season at Carthage on Friday night at 7:30. But the fest would not be complete until the watermelon is eaten, and that is just what Landry Laird, 2, of Kilgore did. Landry is the son of Kynan and Jayanna Laird.
