Whiteside shares experience of Rotary convention
      Kilgore Rotarian Dr. Charles Whiteside gave highlights of his recent trip to the organization's international convention during the club's meeting on Wednesday. Whiteside attended the Rotary International Convention in Birmingham, England, and said the experience at his eighth Rotary International Convention was good and he really enjoyed himself.

Lions learn about TxDOT projects and funding
      Kilgore Lions Club members learned all about Gregg and Rusk County Texas Department of Transportation construction projects when they met on Thursday. Corey Taylor, TxDOT engineer, said projects begun in 2007 in Rusk and Gregg counties are either complete or almost done.

KILGORE CRISIS CENTER SHOE DRIVE
      Kilgore Community Crisis Center will hold its annual back-to-school shoe drive Aug. 20-21 at First Baptist Church. Applications for students to receive shoes may be picked up during the school supply distribution days at St. Luke's United Methodist Church on August 13-14.

School supplies available for low-income families
      Kilgore's social service agencies have united to provide free school supplies for low-income families. Helping Hands, Kilgore Crisis Center, Presbyterian Children's Homes and Services and Kilgore Together are coordinating efforts to bring in donations of school supplies, which will be provided for needy students in grades pre-kindergarten through 12th grade.

KEDC offers reimbursements for investments and jobs
      Kilgore Economic Development Corporation will reimburse a local drilling company up to $78,600 over three years in exchange for investments in infrastructure and jobs. Independent Drilling Co., LLC, proposes to renovate an existing facility and install new equipment and plans to add or relocate 22 new full-time jobs, said Lisa Denton, KEDC economic development specialist.

Electrical certificate at KC
      An information session about careers as an electrical professional will be held at Kilgore College 6:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 3, at the Bert E. Woodruff Adult Education Center in Kilgore. The Industrial Electrical Certificate prepares students to work in manufacturing plants and other production industries that maintain heavy equipment and machinery.

New London residences face 'boil water' order
      Thanks to a break in a main water line on Thursday, New London water customers are asked to boil water until further notice. Vicki Gerhardt, city secretary, said citizens began calling about problems around 11 a.m. and workers discovered a main line had broken at FM 1513 at Hargis Drive.

US 259 Stimulus Project nearing completion
      The Texas Department of Transportation's project to repair and resurface US 259 in Longview between Interstate 20 and US 80 could be completed by the end of this week, weather permitting. Once the resurfacing work is complete, crews will apply pavement markings, according to a TxDOT news release issued on Friday.

      Brooklyn Miyelle Ward of Kilgore turned 6 years old on July 25, 2009, and celebrated with a "Pink Princess Party" at Pump-It- Up on July 26. The daughter of April Ward, Brooklyn's grandparents are Libbie Ward and Joe Johnson of Kilgore and her great-grandmother is Annie L. Hall.
