Hot Dogs- it's Fourth of July

CHITCHAT CORNER LINDA K. BALLARD

IN THE PAST, on Independence Day, I made it my mission to find the best hot dog in East Texas. My trek has carried me as far away as Gilmer, and though I do remember a time cotton candy stopped me in Gladewater, the quest for hot dogs usually has kept me in the area of Kilgore and Overton.

THIS YEAR, the hot dogs have to come to me… yes, I plan on being close to home to enjoy those tasty little delicacies. Mary Pat Eves, secretary at the Overton Chamber of Commerce has actually offered to deliver hot dogs to my car if I can convince someone to take me to the Overton City park to participate in their annual day-long events. Who can beat a deal like that?

YES, they have fourteen food booths set up and ready to go. A parade of non-motorized vehicles including bikes, trikes and wagons will start the patriotic ceremony around the park at 10 a.m. to be followed by many other entertaining events throughout the day including half price swimming for kids. Entertainment and karaoke is scheduled from 5-8 p.m. with those fabulous fireworks to follow at dark! (Make sure you put relish on those hot dogs, Mary! And if any of my readers are heading this way, bring a couple with you.)

CELEBRATING THE FOURTH OF JULY usually means family reunions, concerts, barbecues, parades, baseball games and fireworks. Lest we forget, it signifies one of the most important days in the history of the United Stats. As it was on July 4, 1776, the Second Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Dependence declaring independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain. From that day forward, Americans have fought and continue

to fight for freedom and the right to see that red, white and blue continue to fly. PLEASE remember our troops throughout this day… OTHER NEWS IN THE MAKING - former Kilgoreite Johnny Ferguson, who was living and working in Colorado Springs, CO retired on June 1st and is returning to Kilgore! (Smart man!)

HIS DAUGHTER - Wendy Toliver has written several books. The last one was a romantic comedy called MISS MATCH. Although this book is listed under teen fiction, everyone who has read it, including me has given it a five star rating for making you feel young at heart once again. Please keep her name in front of you, we understand a new publication is being released real soon.

DOES IT COUNT that December Wimberley rescued a turtle while crossing the road while taking me home the other day? Knowing the poor thing was going to ran over, the car swiftly did a u-turn and the turtle was carefully placed on the other side where it could be safe. We name it Independence…in lieu of the fact.
