UPSHUR RURAL ELECTRIC AWARDS WARLICK $1000 SCHOLARSHIP

GILMER — Emily Warlick, a graduate of Sabine High School, received a $1,000 scholarship from the Upshur Rural Electric Cooperative.

URECC awarded $42,000 as part of its 2009 scholarship program, including two $4,000 scholarships, two $2,000 scholarships and 30 $1,000 scholarships.

John C. Dugan, URECC general manager, said 195 applications were received this year.

"In 1997 funds were made available by House Bill 3203, which allowed not-forprofit cooperatives like URECC to put unclaimed member capital credits to use for student scholarships," Dugan said. "This change in the law allowed URECC to take advantge of money previously lost to the state's general revenue fund and reinvest it locally, where it will have a greater impact on the people URECC serves."

The scholarship program adds no cost to the members' electric bill and is funded entirely from unclaimed capital credits issued by the cooperative, Dugan said.
