Holloway and Thornton exchange wedding vows
      Amanda Colleen Holloway and Robert Frank Thornton, both of Tyler, were united in marriage April 4, 2009, in Calvary Baptist Church in Brenham. The bride is the daughter of William and Mary Jo Holloway, Jr., of Chappell Hill. She is the granddaughter of the late William and Claudia Holloway, Sr., of Chula Vista, Calif., and the late Cyril and Eula Graham of Beaumont.

Conner and Aucoin announce engagement
      Mr. and Mrs. Michael Connor of Kilgore are delighted to announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Meghan Claire, to Mark Alexander Aucoin. Alex is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Mark Aucoin of Nacogdoches. Meghan graduated magna cum laude from Millsaps College with a Bachelor of Science degree in economics.

Forest Home's Joy Makers honor seniors with banquet
      The annual Senior Adult Banquet sponsored by the Joy Makers of Forest Home Baptist was held May 12. Doris Snow welcomed everyone and reminded them of prayer requests. The beautiful decorations were done by Betty Bonds, Betty Crews, Pam McWilliams, Laverne Mercer and Anne Waller.

      Xi Pi Mu Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi met May 7 at Lou Anne Morse's home. Debbie McCubbin and Gail Hargrave were co-hostesses, serving sandwiches, fruit and chocolate fudge cake. President Pat Morchat called the meeting to order with the members repeating the Opening Ritual.

      Members of Evergreen Garden Club met at the Lake Cherokee home of Margaret Martin on May 5 for a catered luncheon. President Judy Geddie welcomed members and guests and gave a special welcome to the two newest members, Virginia Finklea and Lawana Sistrunk.

      For years I've been telling people: Don't fear the word "participle." The key to avoiding the frightening- sounding problem known as the "dangling participle" is to not be frightened. It's a simple concept. Just get past the scary word, I tell folks, and you're home free.

Graduation commencement surive swine flu
      IT WAS A QUIET DAY on the OSU campus in Stillwater, Oklahoma the day before the 2009 Spring Commencement. An announcement had been made that no hand shakes would be taking place during the graduation ceremony - the first time ever in the history of the university.
