GETTING DOWN AT THE PROM
     More than 600 attended the Special Education Prom for 30 school districts on Monday, hosted by Kilgore ISD. Students danced and were treated to lunch. Many volunteers helped with the prom, from KHS Student Council to student aides. Cathie Richey (right photo) was all dressed up and enjoying the music, and everyone seemed to have a great time on the dance floor (photo left).

The Flare wins 17 Gold Circle awards in nationwide competition
      Staff members of The Flare, Kilgore College's weekly student newspaper, recently garnered 17 Gold Circle awards in a nationwide competition sponsored by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association. According to Bettye Craddock, KC journalism instructor and newspaper adviser, this is the most Flare staffers have ever received in this contest.

Photo display honors local historian
      The public is invited to the unveiling of the Norman Ward Black Memorial photo display on Monday, May 18, honoring the 22 men who have served as Gregg County judges since the county's creation in 1873. A project of the Gregg County Historical Commission, the courthouse photo collection will be dedicated at 10 a.m. that day.

Ambassadors win 'Spirit Award'
      Kilgore's Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors won the "Spirit Award" for the second year in a row during the National Association of Chamber Ambassadors Conference. Held in Shawnee, Okla.

SWEPCO applauds efforts of two Texas legislators
      SHREVEPORT, La. — AEP Southwestern Electric Power Company is applauding the efforts of two Northeast Texas legislators' efforts to promote technology to capture CO2 from coal-fired power plants. Representatives Tommy Merritt, R-Longview, and Stephen Frost, D-Atlanta, worked diligently to improve the proposed legislation.

DMUC holds 3rd Annual Danville Days Saturday
      Danville United Methodist Church members will hold their 3rd Annual Danville Days on Saturday, May 16, at the church, located at 2187 Danville Rd. The event will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Pastor Wayne Welborn and his congregation invite everyone out for food, fun and fellowship, with shopping at numerous vendor booths filled with jams, jellies, baked goods and more.

ETCOG Transportation System announces extended hours
      To accommodate a growing need for public transportation as well as provide customers in East Texas with better service, the East Texas Council of Governments adopted a new operating schedule giving Rural Transit District (RTD) riders expanded hours to travel.

KC employees assume new responsibilities
      The Kilgore College Board of Trustees has approved new job responsibilities for three KC employees to accommodate the growth and initiatives of the college. Dr. Mike Turpin, Terry Booker and Michelle Wilder have all accepted new roles at the college, approved by the board April 13.

Donations still needed for "Welcome to Kilgore Reception"
      The "Welcome to Kilgore Reception" for the Texas Shakespeare Festival cast and crew is less than two weeks away and donations are still needed to buy items for goody bags for the cast and crew. Organizer Diana Ponder said she's starting to panic because donations have been slow this year.

TSF's Queen's Tea tickets go on sale June 2
      Tickets for the Texas Shakespeare Festival's Queen's Tea will go on sale June 2. The tea is set for 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 14, at the historic Crim Mansion just south of the Kilgore College campus on Highway 259. "The tea is an elegant afternoon affair patterned after an authentic British High Tea," said Raymond Caldwell, TSF director.
