The UIL, the governing body of Texas high school sporting events, shocked everyone again on Wednesday, reversing a decision made last week and will now allow baseball and softball to resume their schedule, again playing havoc with programs statewide. More ... Kilgore Rotarians always play golf for a good cause when they take the Meadowbrook Country Club course for their annual tournament, and this year was no exception. Photo by Lester Murray Members of the Kilgore High School track and field team, such as senior Shaun Edwards (above), will get to compete in the UIL Region II 4A track meet in Denton after all. The meet had been canceled by UIL officials due to a swine flu scare, but is back on — it will be held at the University of North Texas on Tuesday and Wednesday. Competing for KHS will be Edwards in the triple jump, the long jump and the 800 meter relay, Colby Rosen in both boys shot and discus; Shadow Stokes in boys discus; Raven Wiley in girls discus; Lillian Gipson in girls shot; Joel Venegas in the 800 meter relay, the two-mile run and the 800 meter run; Robert Morgan in the 800 meter relay and the 400 meter dash; Chris Page in the 800 meter relay; the girls 800 meter relay team of Brianna Sanders, Eriel Harris, LaQuasha Sheffield and Andrea Ashley; the girls 400 meter relay team of Jessica Shepherd, Ashley, Sheffield and Sanders; and Sheffield in the girls long jump. The UIL Region III Class 2A track meet, with participants from Sabine High School, is back on, as well, and it's being held May 15-16 at Whitehouse. Competing for Sabine will be Ashley Gadson (girls high jump and 400 meter relay), Cortnee Ryan (the 400 meter relay and the 400 meter dash), Cassie Headley and Jamaie Simmons (both in the 400 meter relay), Jason Smith (in the boys high jump and 800 meter relay), and Jacob Kenna, Marc Cunningham and Taylor Gray (all in the 800 meter relay). The state track meet in Austin is now June 5-6. Baseball and softball are still on UIL hold, and won't resume until next week. Softball's playoff against Sulphur Springs hasn't yet been rescheduled, and KHS baseball will play its regular-season finale at Nacogdoches Monday at 6. More ... By this time next month, East Texas Pump Jacks players will have arrived and will be preparing for a season opener on June 5 featuring fireworks and the Texas Collegiate League's newest team, the Victoria Generals.
