Letter to the Editor

I read Mr. Simpson's letter to the editor in a recent Sunday edition and would like to clarify some information.

Having handicap accessibility available downtown has been a priority from the beginning of the project. To better serve our citizens with disabilities we are installing ramps at the intersections and mid-block. The slope on these streets exceeds A.D.A. standards; therefore we are not legally allowed to mark parking spaces as handicap spaces.

Our other option was completely rebuild the street at a significantly higher cost. This has always been a sidewalk project rather than a street project. Be assured we will have far better handicap accessibility than we currently do.

If anyone has questions about the project, they are encouraged to contact Fallon Burns at 903-984-5081 and she will be happy to assist.
