Sabine sweeps Elysian Fields

Girls back on track; 10 straight for boys

It was another big night for the Sabine High School basketball teams, as the Cardinals went to 3-0 in District 18-2A and won their 10th straight game, and the Lady Cardinals got back on the winning track, both against Elysian Fields.

Sabine's boys got a balanced scoring night across the board and wound up with a 60-24 win. Sabine (22-3 overall this season) remains unbeaten in district play and visits New Diana on Tuesday night.

The Cardinals led 35-9 at the half, and then completely put it away by outscoring EF 18-6 in the third period. Sabine got 14 points each from Lie'Quan Byrd and Noah Jackson (who each had four three-pointers), and Tyler Woodrell joined them in double figures with 10 points. He also had eight rebounds.

Jacob Kenna scored six, Hunter Powdrill and Josh Montana five each, Colton Kirk and Zach Royce two each, and Chance Haskins had a point on a free throw. All players who played for Sabine scored.

EF was led by Keyante Byrd, who had 12, and Alex Mucklin with eight. The Yellow Jackets have just one win this season. Friday at Sabine, just five players were dressed out.

Sabine's 10-game winning streak dates back to Dec. 13 — its last loss was in a tournament in Beaumont.

• Sabine 51, Elysian Fields 32 (girls): It was a little more competitive on the girls side, but still wound up heavy in Sabine's favor.

Coach Paul Bell's Lady Cards (18-5 overall, 4-1 in district play) looked to be on a mission, picking up 13 steals in the contest and playing with intensity on both ends of the floor.

Cassie Headley had 14 points for Sabine, hitting two threepointers, helped with an assist. a steal and had two rebounds. Cortnee Ryan had 11 points, also hit two three-pointers, and had four assists, three steals, and six rebounds.

Ashley Gadson had five points, three assists, five steals and two rebounds; Alex Easley had five points, a steal and a rebound; Katy Strange had four points, a steal, five rebounds and two assists; Jamaie Simmons hit a three-pointer and had an assist and two rebounds; Jessica Woodruff had three points and a rebound; Lindsay McClain had three points, an assist, a steal and three rebounds; and Shayla Gossett also had three points, a steal, and six rebounds.

Elysian Fields was led by Sarah Northey's 20 points.

The Lady Cards also play at New Diana on Tuesday night.
