What break?
Red-hot start lifts KC to big win over Ranger
Photo by Lester Murray RIGHT ON THE MONEY — Kilgore College sophomore forward Janae Henderson of Orange (51) puts up a shot against Ranger. Henderson and the Lady Rangers blew by Ranger, 85-43, Friday night at Masters Gymnasium in the Ozarka Lady Rangers Classic, KC's first game in a month after the lengthy Christmas break. The tournament was to conclude Saturday, and both KC teams will be in Region XIV Conference action Wednesday night at Tyler Junior College. That month-long break the Kilgore College Lady Rangers took in December didn't cause them to play with much rust, it appears.
Kilgore College, hosting the annual Ozarka Lady Ranger Classic this weekend here at Masters Gymnasium, beat Ranger on Friday night by more than 40 points, finishing with an 85-43 victory.
The win moves KC's ladies to 9-2 on the season overall, and at press time, coach Roy Thomas hoped to get another non-conference victory as the Lady Rangers were to finish the minitournament by facing the Houston Jaguars on Saturday afternoon.
KC's men, coached by Brian Hoberecht, were idle this weekend. Both KC teams get back into their Region XIV Confer- ence schedules on Wednesday night at Tyler Junior College, with the ladies' game tipping off at 5:30 p.m.
Against Ranger, KC played very good defense, including 12 steals (Denetra Kellum led with five). KC's transition game was big — at one point in the first half, the Lady Rangers, creating turnovers and moving the ball with a very up-tempo game, went on an 8-0 run to blow the game open. After the early stages, Ranger couldn't stay in the game.
Dabrielle Franklin, a freshman from East St. Louis, Ill., sank two free throws to give KC a 37-15 lead, and the half ended when Ranger's Kirstin Sanders managed a three-point shot.
KC opened the second half on a 9-2 run and never looked back.
Camille Voitot, a freshman from France, led KC with 16 points. She had four three-pointers in the game, and wasn't the only one: Kilgore College went 7-of-12 from three-point land. The Lady Rangers were 30-of-59, about 50 percent, overall.
Napoleonville, La., freshman Danyell Oliver scored 14 for the Lady Rangers, as did Elise Kea, a native of Killen. Kellum, a sohomore guard from Kirbyville, had 12 points, and Janae Henderson of Orange had nine. Franklin finished with eight points and eight rebounds.
Also Friday, Houston beat Lon Morris, 92-88.
