The Sabine boys also won their game big, 76-26, the district opener for them. This 2008-09 District 18-2A basketball schedule might not be easy, but the Sabine High School programs are certainly making it look that way.

Both Sabine teams drilled Harleton on Friday night, with coach Tim Davis' boys, ranked fifth in the state, hammering Harleton 76-26 in the district opener, and coach Paul Bell's Sabine High girls moving to 3-0 in the district with a convincing 49-25 win.

The Sabine teams will play at Harmony on Tuesday night, junior varsity boys beginning at 5 p.m. and the rest of the contests to follow.

• Sabine 49, Harleton 25 (girls): A close game in the first quarter — 8-7 Harleton — turned into a blowout in Sabine's favor in the second, with the Lady Cardinals outscoring Harleton 24-10.

On the night, Cortnee Ryan led Sabine and all scorers with 20 points. She also contributed by grabbing 11 steals, five assists, and had a rebound.

Shayla Gossett had seven points, two rebounds, a steal and an assist, and Katy Strange had six points and two rebounds. Cassie Headley scored five, had two steals, two assists and a rebound. Ashley Gadson had four points, a steal and a rebound, and Alex Easley had three, a steal and a rebound. Lindsay McClain had two points, an assist, and three rebounds, and Jessica Woodruff also chipped in two points, had three steals and led the Lady Cards' rebounding effort with four.

• Sabine 76, Harleton 26 (boys): Another game, another runaway for the Cardinals, who improved to an impressive 20-3 with the victory, their eighth straight. It was really never in doubt. Sabine went up 27-6 in the first period, allowed just two points in the second, and went into the locker room at halftime with a 46-8 lead.

Colton Kirk led Sabine with 15 points. Noah Jackson had 12, Jacob Kenna 11, and Chance Haskins 10. Josh Montana and Lie'Quan Byrd each dropped in seven, Tyler Woodrell scored six, and Hunter Powdrill and Zach Royce each had four. Kirk, Jackson and Haskins each had two three-point shots for the Cardinals in the game.

Hunter Lacy led Harleton with 10 points. Tanner Beattie chipped in eight.

Sabine, ranked fifth in Class 2A in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches poll, hasn't lost since Dec. 13 in a tournament in Beaumont.
