Kilgore opens fall tennis season with sweep
In action today at Center

Beating your opponents in every single matchup — that's a heck of a way to start the fall tennis season.

That's what the Kilgore High School tennis team did on Saturday, sweeping Gladewater in every match, 20-0. Kilgore, coached by Jason Maroney, was to play at Center today at 4 p.m., then compete next weekend in a tournament at Texas High in Texarkana.

Against Carthage, Kilgore swept everything, every category. Not everyone played singles competition, but Maroney said he was pleased with the results.

The boys singles saw Jody Madding beat Jason Holt, 8-2; Josh Bailey beat Noah Blackmon, 8-0; Kade Bittick beat Cody Edwards, 8-2; Eric Applegate beat Cody Mahaffey, 8-4; Trent Raby beat Joel Blackmon, 8-4; and Jeremy Berryhill beat Chase Bugh, 8-0.

In girls singles play, Callie Cunyus beat Alliegh Pittman, 8-0; Meredith Gregg defeated Amanda Goodson, 8-3; Chelsey Cox beat Daisey Wallace, 8-5; Caitlind Trowbridge beat Dakota Thompson, 8-3; Shawna Bass outlasted Jordan Palmer, 8-4, and beat Kadi Huff, 6-1; and Shelby Duncan beat Whitney Pearson, 8-2.

In doubles play, Trevar Compton and Applegate beat Edwards and Mahaffey, 8-1; Josh Bailey and Madding beat

Blackmon and Blackmon, 8-3; and Way and Berryhill beat Gladewater's Howie and Alamonza, 8-0.

In girls doubles action, Hailey Smith joined Cunyus for an 8-0 win over Thompson and Wallace. Duncan and Cox beat Gladewater's Palmer and Pearson, 8-3, and Trowbridge and Bass beat Pittman and Burr, 8-1.

The only mixed doubles matchup of the day saw Kilgore's Kade Bittick and Meredith Gregg beat Holt and Goodson, 9-8 (6).

Next Friday, Sept. 5 in the tournament at Texarkana, Kilgore faces Texas High at 8 a.m., Waco Midway at 1:30 p.m., and on Saturday, they'll face Frisco at 8 a.m. and an opponent to be determined at 1:30.
