Local student qualifies to compete at world's largest rodeo
Katy Strange, an 11 grade student at Sabine High School has earned a position on the Texas State high school rodeo team and will be traveling with fellow teammates to Farmington, New Mexico July 20-26 to compete at the 60th Annual National High School Finals Rodeo (NHSFR) in the Breakaway Roping and Goat Tying competitions. Katy was named the Texas High School Breakaway Champion and finished in fourth place overall in Goat Tying for the 2008 year.
Featuring over 1,500 contestants from 41 states, five Canadian Provinces, and Australia, the National High School Finals is the world's largest rodeo. In addition to competing for over $200,00 in prizes. NHSFR contestants will also be vying for more than $325,000 in college scholarships and the chance to be named the National High School Rodeo Champion. To earn this title, contestants must finish in the top twenty after two go-rounds of intense competition before advancing to Saturday night's final championship performance. Along with great rodeo completion and the chance to meet new friends from around the world, NHSFR contestants have the opportunity to represent their team in a volleyball and basketball tournament. Katy will be competing in the 3-on-3 basketball tournament representing the Texas team. NHSFR contestants also have the opportunity to enjoy nightly dances including a Cowboy Prom, participate in a talent contest, and many other fun social activities.
