THIS week, for example, we received a resume from a young job-seeker who listed his accomplishments. Among those: fluency in German and Esperanto. ESPERANTO? FOR THOSE who don't know, Esperanto is a language manufactured back in the 1800s by an opthamologist who believed that a universal language was the key to universal peace. And who are we to say it might not be? THE language is spoken by -- at most -- two million people in the universe. And one of those two million applied here. +++ THE OTHER thing that happens when you run a small business is that you have this terrible tendency to assess the profitability of whatever operation you happen to be visiting. YOU count heads and estimate revenue; you count workers, look at the facilities and try to estimate expenses. And then you look for wasys that the operator might either maximize revenues or minimize expenses. FOR example: we couldn't help but notice the other night that the Pump Jacks slide early and often into second, third and home base -- to the detriment of their britches. Pants must be a significant expense for the team. IT occurs to us that the orgainization would benefit financially from a pant sponsor. And, perhaps some business could benefit from the exposure that might accompany replacing pants for the baseballers. Maybe some advertising fun with "got you covered" or "minimize your exposure." +++ AFTER dinner Wednesday evening - don't you just love daylight savings time? - we drove around River Bend Nusiness Park, the new industrial and commercial park being developed by the Mickey-Denny-Sanny Sue Smith clan with a boost from Kenny Mobbs and Randy Brogoitti. WE found ourselves mightily impressed by the number of "SOLD" signs on the property. THERE'S a great deal of activity on the private industrial park at the intersection of Hwy. 31 and 4S Industrial Blvd. -- between FM 1252 and the Pine Hill Landfill. +++ HAPPY birthday today (Sunday) toBlair Gee, Brenda Joyce Hutto, Joe Cross, Stacy Grady, Don Huffman, Heather Davis, Buster Green, Rodney Barthelemess, Eva Mae Smith, Bill Pearce III, Tiffany Tinner, Carrie Friesen, Kevin Cline, Robert Poland, Cassidy Ferguson, Pearly Lohr, Mike Free.
