He's entertaining the troops
Recently, one of the biggest doors of opportunity opened for this young man in the way of an offer to perform for our many troops overseas. He returned home safe and sound Tuesday evening. We are not allowed to reveal the bases he saw during the tour, but, while gone, he e-mailed the following home: "In 3-4 days we have been in Abram tanks, Blackhawks, Apaches, C17's and just about every piece of military equipment you can think of," said Jerry. "We have been treated like celebrities here just because we cared enough to come over and do these shows for the guys. We have made friends we will not ever forget and it feels like they are already family…I wish I could explain the love these people have for you all and what they are sacrificing to be here and keep you free, but I am sure most of you have family and friends here and probably have a notion anyways. I am so happy to have the opportunity to come here and bring them some of "back home" to make their lives over here any little bit easier, and I will undoubtedly keep coming back until all this is over or they get tired of my jokes." (You have, Jerry, just become Number One in the hearts of many more than grandmother's and your parents. The ability to make others laugh under difficult situations is such a blessing and we are grateful.) "J.D. thinks the kids are taking me out for my birthday," said Wanda Billings, whose birthday is Sunday. "Boy, will he be surprised! Instead, we are celebrating his 25th Anniversary in business. His mother Neta, his son and daughter-inlaw, Shawn and Rebecca, and grandchildren Jake and Cassie have planned the surprise celebration for Billings Surveying at Barron's Café in Longview. (Happy Anniversary to J. D. and company in 25 years of service and Happy Birthday to Wanda. Better hold on to her J. D. not every wife is so willing to give up her own birthday party.) "The reading program at Kilgore Public Library will continue through August 6," said Janet Marley. "We had a juggler here on Wednesday as part of the program and he had everyone excited and laughing. I kept seeing emergency rooms and law suits while everyone else saw fun. You know, on second thought, there may be a time I get too old for this…," she laughed. "Bring the kids by and sign them up," she added. Chris Cameron went in search of her nieces last week who are attending the Rangerette Summer Camp, Grades 5-8. Madison O'Reilly came all the way from San Anselmo, California to attend the camp with her cousin Emily Ivey from Gilmer. Chris, who works at the Kilgore Post Office, was trying her best to get out long enough to go in search. "They have been here a couple of days already and haven't even laid eyes upon their aunt," she said. "Madison traded in her soccer cleats for high step Keds this week and Emily is known as the Flying Freckle from Upshur County. She's known for back handsprings and has attended gymnastics here in Kilgore," she said. "(We are quite sure the girls are going to be pleased to see you, too, now that you have divulged so much information, Chris. Have fun.) I know, I started this last week with Pete. But, this is what I heard this week, when I picked up the phone. "It's clean, Linda," claimed Jimmy Ware. So here it is: A little girl was caught digging a hole in her neighbor's back yard. The neighbor lady went out and asked her what she was doing. "I'm digging a hole to bury my goldfish," said the girl. "Oh, I'm sorry it died," said the lady, "But, you don't need a hole that big." "Oh, yes, I do," said the little girl as she continued to dig. My goldfish is in your cat…" May His Love and Laughter Fill Your Hearts and Your Homes.
