KILGOROUND

Did you know that in addition to second Saturday recycling at the city yard, behind City Hall, we can haul our paper, plastic, tin and aluminum to the recycling center at the Allied Waste Landfill? Gene Keenon, Allied director of community relations, said a lot of Kilgorites take advantage of recycle day and between Kilgore, Longview and Marshall, the landfill is making two trips a week to a Material Recovery Facility outside of Duncanville for dropoff.

Some things that cannot be recycled are: oil and anti-freeze containers, recycling these is hazardous; and beverage cases, 12, 18, 24 and 30- pack boxes have an additive that does not break down with water.

Feel free to bring bundled newspapers, clear plastic soda bottles, aluminum cans, tin cans, milk jugs, cardboard and other recyclables to the

landfill 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursdays.

Kara Borders called in this week to point out that the Purple Martins will be in town for about one more month and remind everyone that these birds need to be protected.

According to Borders, the bird's natural housing habitat is being taken over by birds that are not native to the area, such as starlings and sparrows.

One way to protect our feathered friends is to put up a Purple Martin house in your yard - but not too far from the house.

"They are social birds and like to be in busy areas and around people," Borders said.

The black birds have shorter legs than other birds and short beaks. Males are black with a bluish-purple tint to their feathers. Females are black with a gray breast and underbelly.

Recent sightings have been in the high-wires between the old Brookshire's' Grocery Store and the new one; and, downtown at the worlds richest acre.

Borders picked up bird watching from her dad Allen Vermillion, of Bonham. She has passed the affection on to her two boys, aged three and five.

"They know and love the Purple Martins," Borders said. "We all enjoy watching and protecting these amazing birds."
