+++ FOR THOSE who asked, Father's Day with Mom was just fine, thanks. +++ JEAN LAIRD is out and around. But she's moving more cautiously than before the fall and the broken hip. Ever a gardener, she was in the office last week touting the advantages of a hybrid petunia that she swears goes by the imaginative name of Supertunia. +++ YES, that's a stalk of corn growing in the flower bed in front of the newspaper office, planted, we suspect, by a passing bird. With the flooding in the midwest, the price of corn -- as well as everything made from corn and anything that eats corn -- is going up. We're raising our own crop at the News Herald and looking for ethanol and Karo syrup recipes. +++ THE busy corner this month is at the intersection of Highway 42 and Interstate 20. Dr. J.T. Roberts' new "travel plaza" complete with Wendy's restaurant is under construction on the corner. Just to the south, a company which writes and sells and installs software for new-fangled gasoline pumps is building a training center near the entrance to Royal Oaks subdivision. +++ MAYBE the most entertaining part of the Crisis Center's Casino Night was watching folks try to figure out the craps table. Unless you're a regular at the real casinos -- and we're not -- the craps table is as easily deciphered as Chinese opera. WE now feel qualified to go to Shreveport and understand why we've lost all our money. +++ WITH gasoline at $4 per gallon, the temptation to buy a scooter is powerful. But, please, take the Motorcycle Safety Foundation safety course. And wear a helmet; sweat will wash off, brain damage will not. +++ CELEBRATING birthdays today areTammy Dorsey, Fanny Gurley, Mrs. H.H. Harper, Baron Thrower, Becky LaGregs, Dorothy Raney, Amanda Diann Tanner, Waynell Summers, Wayne Patterson, Linda Hughes, Jackie Bowley, Alan Doyle Gage, Kristi Kirksey, Cody Shead, Rusty Russell HAPPY anniversary today toMr. and Mrs. Joe L.
