LOCAL SPORTS IN BRIEF
Kilgore native Courtney Thomas is one of four legs of the Baylor University men's track team sprint relay competing in the 2008 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Drake Stadium, on the campus of Thomas and the other three members of the 400 meter relay - Trey Harts, Marcus Boyd and Jacob Norman - ran the event in 39.77 seconds to earn a spot among the field of eight finalists for the national title in that event. The relay's finals were to be conducted Saturday, following the deadline of this edition of the Kilgore News Herald. Thomas, a 2005 Kilgore High School graduate, represented KHS well in track, earning two secondplace finishes in the state meet just before his graduation. He also was a big part of the Bulldogs' 2004 UIL Class 4A Division II state football championship as a wide receiver. BASEBALL Todd still doing very well Another Kilgore native, Jess Todd, is pitching in the St. Louis Cardinals organization after being drafted by the Cardinals in June 2007. Todd has been somewhat of a phenom since his one great year at the University of Arkansas, and is still doing well pitching for the Cardinals' double A club in Springfield, Illinois, the Springfield Cardinals. Springfield is one of eight teams in the Texas League along with the Arkansas Travelers, the Northwest Arkansas Naturals, the Tulsa Drillers, the Corpus Christi Hooks, the Frisco RoughRiders, the Midland RockHounds and the San Antonio Missions.
He earned the win for the Cardinals on Wednesday, a 6-1 win over the Travelers. He pitched 7 1/3 innings in the game. This year, he has an earned-run average of 0.83. He's got a 2-1 record since arriving at Springfield, and has pitched 43 1/3 innings. He has 31 strikeouts in that span. Springfield is 33-32 through 65 games this year, and in first place in the Texas League's North Division. Todd's Cardinals were to begin a four-game series at the Travelers on Monday, a 7:10 p.m. start. SOFTBALL Juneteenth tourney next weekend The annual Juneteenth softball tournament will be held next Saturday, June 21, in Longview at Broughton Park. Awards will be given to the top three places. Then '08 games will be shown beginning Saturday, June 28 with the CHAMPS Heart of Texas Bowl in Copperas Cove against Fort Scott (Kan). There will be a brief break, and the KC-Tyler Junior College game from Oct. 6 will be aired on July 12. KC-Northeastern Oklahoma A&M from Oct. 20 will air July 19, and last year's Southwest Junior College Football Conference title game between KC and Navarro will air July 26. The Rangers open the season here, ironically against Fort Scott on Aug. 30. It will be the third meeting between the two schools in three seasons. KC defeated Fort Scott in the Heart of Texas Bowl in January, 2007. TENNIS Clinic begins here Monday Kilgore High School tennis coach Jason Maroney will host a summer tennis clinic (and not just for students) running from Monday through Friday.
