KILGOROUND

NOTES FROM THE bulging note file...

+++

DAMON Denning, a friend of the News Herald, was in the office recently to bemoan the change in how we East Texans use the greeting "How're you doing?"

"MY grandmother was a school teacher and one of the first things she taught me was that "How're you doing' was an invitation to sit down and catch up."

NOW, he says, it's nothing more than a throwaway greeting. "When people ask me how I'm doing, and I start to tell 'em, they walk away. They don't really want to know."

DAMON recommends 'Howdy' or 'How-do' as an alternative. Even though they're derived from 'How're you doing,' it's okay to use them as disposable greetings.

GET yourself a pair of cheap shades from Wal- Mart and you'll own them. Invest in a pair of pricey

sunglasses with a hard case and the Nike swoosh on 'em and those rascals will own you.

DISCLAIMER: This newspaper is a media sponsor of the East Texas Pump Jacks.

WITH that out of the way, I'm happy to report we look forward to the home opener of the Pump Jacks at Driller Park on Thursday. Who among us doesn't hope to re-create pleasant memories of summer evenings and baseball?

TICKETS for individual home games - - $5 for adults and $4 for kids - - will go on sale Monday at 9 a.m. at the team's office, 1100 Stone Road, Suite 120.

SIDE note: as of Friday mid-afternoon the team's uniforms had not yet arrived. Fingers are crossed.

SHOULD you find yourself on an Arizona highway and encounter a sign that says "Low Maintenance Area," turn around.

DON'T ask.

COLLARD plants, from whence come the delicate collard greens, are members of the cabbage family and members of a genus whose name is Greek for "without a head."

EVEN using city labor, officials say it will cost more than $13,000 to remove the downed trees -- mostly hardwoods -- from Meadowbrook Park. Those are the trees that were blown down in the big windstorm back in the spring.

CITY hall offered the wood free to anyone looking for hardwood and only one person showed up. No word on how many trees she hauled off.
