+++ DAMON Denning, a friend of the News Herald, was in the office recently to bemoan the change in how we East Texans use the greeting "How're you doing?" "MY grandmother was a school teacher and one of the first things she taught me was that "How're you doing' was an invitation to sit down and catch up." NOW, he says, it's nothing more than a throwaway greeting. "When people ask me how I'm doing, and I start to tell 'em, they walk away. They don't really want to know." DAMON recommends 'Howdy' or 'How-do' as an alternative. Even though they're derived from 'How're you doing,' it's okay to use them as disposable greetings. +++ GET yourself a pair of cheap shades from Wal- Mart and you'll own them.
