Sabine High School 2008 senior honors and awards The SABINE HIGH SCHOOL 2008 SENIOR HONORS AND AWARDS PROGRAM was held Thursday, May 22, at the Sabine High Auditorium at 7 P.M. Eddie Shawn, SHS Principal, welcomed parents, guests and representatives of various organizations and colleges who recognized achievements and honors of the seniors. Mr. Shawn began the program with recognition of Jackson Lane, a junior who earned a place in the Texas Music Educators Association All State Men's choir this year. He began the senior program by asking the members of the Class of 2008 to stand and be recognized. Charlotte Austin, Pastor McCary's Chapel Methodist Church, made a presentation to the seniors. U.S. Representative Louie Gohmert and State Representative Tommy Merritt also sent letters of commendation. Five members of the Class of 2008 are graduating under the State of Texas Distinguished Achievement Program and are Texas Scholars with Distinction. Jeremy Gray, Marissa Huskey, Sandra James, Demi Thompson and Seth York were presented with special plaques. Twenty five other members of the class were recognized for graduating Recommended and Texas Scholars with Distinction. They are Jesse Adamson, Crystal Akers, Amy Alliston, Jon Berryhill, Megan Brown, Travis Daniel, Zachary Golden, Shelby Guthrie, Colton Harvick, Chelsea Headley, Jacqueline Hooker, Christian Ivey, Samantha Jackson, Robin Kennedy, Katherine Kossa, Johnathon Laird, Timothy McDougal, Shaunna Moore, Gabrielle Samples, Jacob Taylor, Troy Townsend, Mark Vasquez, April Walker, Travis Warlick and Lauren Wilcox. Twenty six members of the Class were recognized for graduating Recommended and Texas Scholars. They are Stephanie Ballard, Lacie Bauders, Darren Danos, Bron Dent, Jacob Dunaway, Sean Eddington, Gilbert Edge, April Ferguson, Preston Florence, Jordan Gabriel, C. J. Gibbs, Hailey Hawks, Joshua Herod, Glen Hutchison, Robert Johnson, Ryan Ketchum, Maria Lara, Shawna Levingston, Brandon Lummus, Syndi Madden, Jeremy Montana, Brendon Moore, Katie Parks, Danielle Powe, Jelissa Tychsen and Katie Walker. Darren Danos, Christian Ivey, Maria Lara, Syndi Madden, Timothy McDougal, Jacob Taylor and Jelissa Tycksen received an academic award for maintainting a GPA of 4.0 or more for two years. Mr. Shawn presented the Honor Graduates who were in the top ten percent of the class. SISD Board President Stephen Woodfin awarded plaques to Valedictorian Jeremy Gray and Salutatorian Marissa Huskey. SISD Board Member Tony Raymond gave Top Ten Percent plaques to Sandra James, Demi Thompson, Meagan Brown, Samantha Jackson, Lauren Wilcox, Seth York and Gabrielle Samples. Other Honor Graduates with a 4.0 or above grade point average were awarded plaques by SISD Board members Steven Best, Bill Harvey and John Kenna. These students were Crystal Akers, Stephanie Ballard, Jon Berryhill, Travis Daniel, Chelsea Headley, Jacqueline Hooker, Robin Kennedy, Katherine Kossa, Johnathon Laird, Timothy McDougal, Jelissa Tychsen, April Walker and Travis Warlick. SISD Board Member James Gray presented the UIL Scholar Awards to Meagan Brown, Jeremy Gray, Marissa Huskey, Samantha Jackson, Sandra James, Gabrielle Samples, Demi Thompson and Seth York. KC All-Region Leadership Honors Recipients were given a certificate by Jamie Smitherman. Those students are Stephanie Ballard, Jon Berryhill, Meagan Brown, Travis Daniel, Jeremy Gray, Marissa Huskey, Samantha Jackson, Sandra James, Gabrielle Samples, Demi Thompson, Travis Warlick and Seth York. Senior National Honor Society members were recognized by Marian Richardson, SHS Senior Counselor. The are Crystal Akers, Stephanie Ballard, Meagan Brown, Jeremy Gray, Marissa Huskey, Samantha Jackson, Sandra James, Ryan Ketchum, Johnathan Laird, Danielle Powe, Gabrielle Samples, Demi Thompson, Travis Warlick, Lauren Wilcox and Seth York. Marissa Huskey and Jeremy Gray received certificates for being nominated for the 2008 National Honor Society Scholarship. Eddie Shawn presented the 2007-2008 Principal's Leadership Award to Stephanie Ballard and the TASSP Academic Excellence Award to Marissa Huskey. Mrs. Richardson and Mr. Shawn presented the Red Cord Honors Program Certificates to seniors who gave twice to blood drives at Sabine High School this year. Blood donations are considered community service Those students are Jesse Adamson, Crystal Akers, Lacie Bauders, Jon Berryhill, April Byrum, Jacob Clark, Travis Daniel, Sean Eddington, Gilbert Edge, Jordan Gabriel, Shelby Guthrie, Hailey Hawks, Christian Ivey, Robin Kennedy, Ryan Ketchum, Shaunna Moore, Michael Ortiz, Jacob Taylor, Troy Townsend, Mark Vasquez, Max Wilkins and Andrew Williamson. Nallely Rios received the Lamar Award for Excellence from Doug Messer and Kerry Kilgore, Member of Danville Masonic Lodge #101. Wesley McFarlane was names SHS Agriculture Student of the Year. Wesley has won two scholarships to Lincoln Tech @ Grand Prairie. Angela Cherry was selected as the Outstanding Family Consumer Science Student of the Year. Jacob Tarver was recognized for getting a Welding Certificate from Kilgore College dual credit courses he took his senior year at Sabine High School. Marissa Huskey, Jeremy Gray, Sandra James, Jon Berryhill, Stephanie Ballard, Samantha Jackson and Seth York were recognized for being Elk's Teenagers of the Month. Stephanie Ballard and Jesse Adamson were selected by the SHS Faculty as Senior IDEAL Students. Coach Bryan Stagner recognized Sandra James as the KETK 56 News Student of the Year Campaign Nominee. Mr. Stagner introduced Sandra James and Travis Daniel as the Wendy's High School Heisman Award Nominees from SHS for 2007-2008. Samantha Jackson and Colton Harvick received the United States Army Reserve National Scholar/ Athlete Award from Sergeant Jace Halbrook, United States Army. Tom Sartor presented the Kilgore Rotary Club Scholar Athletes Scholarship to Chelsea Headley and Travis Daniel. Students who were recognized for joining the military services were Steven Lee, United States Army; Troy Townsend and Willie Mumphrey, United States Marines; Jesse Adamson, Sean Eddington, Jeremy Gray and Jonathan Laird, United States Navy; and Travis Daniel, Army National Guard. Gabrielle Samples received a scholarship for the Mt. Pleasant CME Church presented to her by her father. Jake Taylor received a four year scholarship from the Ladies Guild of St. Theresa's Catholic Church. Eddie Shawn awarded the Martin Gas Scholarship to Jake Taylor and the Upshur-Rural Electric Cooperative Corporation Scholarship to Marissa Huskey. Zeb Strong, SHS graduate, presented the Strong Family Reunion Scholarship to Gabrielle Samples. Kay Castles presented American Petroleum Institution Scholarships to Colton Gibbs, Shelby Guthrie, Chelsea Headley, Sandra James, Katie Kossa, Jake Taylor, Demi Thompson and Travis Warlick. Mrs. Castles also awarded Glen Hutchison the Don Kruse Kilgore College Scholarship. Wesley McFarlane and Steven Moore received the Bobby Player Memorial Scholarship presented by Ray Player. Tom Sartor gave Colton Gibbs, Robin Kennedy and Travis Warlick Kilgore Rotary Club Scholarships. Jon Berryhill received the ELK's "Teenager of the Year" Stephanie Ballard received a Junior League of Longview, Inc. Scholarship. Travis Warlick was awarded a Sam Walton (WAL-MART) Community Scholarship. Gabriele Samples received a scholarship from the Kilgore Alumnae Chapter Signs Theta Sorority. Eagle Scout Darren Danos received a Trail's End Scholarship. SHS Student Council Scholarships went to Stephanie Ballard, Samantha Jackson, Sandra James, Robin Kennedy, Danielle Powe, Gabrielle Samples, Demi Thompson and Travis Warlick. Travis Warlick received a CHEMPLEX Scholarship. Dawn Hendrix received the scholarship from the First National Bank of Liberty City. Stephanie Ballard received the scholarship from the Kilgore National Bank. Katy Parks, Jake Taylor and Travis Warlick were awarded scholarships by Donnie Sullivent, Charter Member of the Liberty City Ladies Club. Tobie Turner presented the Sabine ISD Athletic Boosters Club and the Lady Cardinals Fan Club Scholarships to Jon Berryhill, Angela Cherry, Travis Daniel, Jacob Dunaway, Preston Florence, Jordan Gabriel, Jeremy Gray, Shelby Guthrie, Chelsea Headley, Dawn Hendrix, Josh Herod, Marissa Huskey, Samantha Jackson, Sandra James, Gabrielle Samples, Demi Thompson and Jake Taylor. Jeremy Gray, Samantha Jackson and Jake Taylor received the Memorial Scholarships presented by Tobie Turner. Carrie Warlick, President of the Sabine ISD Band Boosters Club, awarded the Sabine ISD Band Boosters Scholarships to Jesse Adamson, Crystal Akers, Meagan Brown, Angela Cherry, Preston Florence, Jeremy gray, Marissa Huskey, Johnathon Laird, Brandon Lummus, Wesley McFarland, Mark Vasquez and Seth York. Brandon Lummus received Music and Band Scholarships from Tyler Junior College. Preston Florence was awarded a tuition and fees scholarship at Tyler Junior College for becoming a TJC Trainer. Sandra James won a Women's Athletic Scholarship, a Carr Academic Scholarship and the D/M Shahan Scholarship at Angelo State University. Samantha Jackson received the Howard Payne University Scholar Merit Award. Jon Berryhill received a Le- Tourneau University Honors Scholarship. Stephanie Ballard was awarded the Stephen F. Austin State University Academic Excellence Scholarship, a first year Academic Comp Grant and other grants Demi Thompson received the University of Texas at Arlington Outstanding Transfer Scholarship and the 2008-2009 Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship. The Kilgore College J.R. "Red" Russell Scholarship was presented to Gabriel Jordan and Travis Warlick by Shirley Brown, representative of the Former Sabine Student Association. The KC Kilgore Chamber of Commerce Scholarship was presented to Timothy McDougal by Ronnie Spradlin. Larry Woodfin, KC Board Board Member, presented the following Kilgore College Scholarships: Presidential Scholarship to Lauren Wilcox, the Earl & Patsy Hollingsworth to Jelissa Tycksen, the James M. Richardson Memorial Scholarship to Marissa Huskey, the Ralgh and Evis Hartman Memorial Scholarship to Travis Warlick, the J. G. Barker Scholarship to Darren Danos, the Dr. and Mrs. Leslie Matthews to Amy Alliston and the Counselor's Scholarship to Nallely Rios. SISD Superintendent Stacey Bryce presented the Kilgore College Superintent's Scholarship to Katie Walker. Colton Harvick was awarded the Kilgore College Principal's Scholarship by Eddie Shawn. Darren Danos and April Walker received the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board Award for Early Graduation. Demi Thompson is the recipient of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board Award for students with 30 or more hours of dual credit. Eddie Shawn presented the State of Texas Highest ranking graduate scholarship to Jeremy Gray. The Liberty Cily Ladies Club provided punch and cookies for the participants and their guests immediately following the Program. |
