Preliminary TAKS scores for KISD

The Kilgore Independent School District board of trustees met last night and one item on the agenda was to learn how KISD did on the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills testing.

Dennis Williams, assistant superintendent for curriculum at KISD gave the report to the board on the overall percentage of TAKS tests results for the district.

Williams said the demographic summary for KISD is as follows: in reading, out of 1999 students tested, 89 percent met standards, out of 393 African American students tested, 83 percent met standards, out of 382 Hispanic students tested, 81 percent met standards, out of 1190 white students tested, 94 percent met standards and out of 903 economically disadvantaged students tested, 82 percent met standards.

Williams said in mathematics, numbers reflect the same categories in order as above: 75 percent of all students met standards, 59 percent of African American students met standard, 71 percent of Hispanic students met standards, 82 percent of white students met standards and 66 percent of economic disadvantaged students met standards.

In social studies 91 percent of all students met standards, 85 percent of African American students met standards, 82 percent of Hispanic students met standards, 94 percent of white students met standards and 85 percent of economic disadvantaged students met standards according to Williams.

In science and writing, in that order, 73 percent and 94 percent of all students met standards, for African American students, 60 percent and 94 percent met standards, for Hispanic students, 57 percent and 91 percent met standards, for white students, 82 percent and 96 percent met standards and for economically disadvantaged students, 60 percent and 91 percent met standards.

Jody Clements provided numbers for individual campuses in all five of the same categories.

According to Clements, at Chandler Elementary School, third grade students who are tested for reading and math only, 89 percent met standards in reading and 68 percent met standards in math. At Kilgore Intermediate School fourth grade students were tested in reading, writing and math, 86 percent met standards in reading, 93 percent in writing and 85 percent in math, fifth grade students were tested in reading and science, 91 percent met standards in reading and 73 percent in science. At Maude Laird Middle School, sixth grade students are tested in reading and math. 97 percent met standards in reading and 89 percent in math. In seventh grade students are tested in reading, writing and math. 91 percent met standards in reading, 96 percent in writing and 89 percent in math. In the eighth grade students were tested in reading, science and social studies. 99 percent met standards in reading, 68 percent in science and 86 percent in social studies. At Kilgore High School ninth grade students were tested in reading and math, 88 percent met standards in reading and 60 percent met standards in math. In tenth grade students were tested in reading, math, science and social studies. 92 percent met standards in reading, 66 percent in math, 63 percent in science and 89 percent in social studies. In the eleventh grade students were tested in the same four categories as tenth and are as follows, 92 percent in reading, 81 percent in math, 76 percent in science and 92 percent in social studies.

Williams said these scores are preliminary reports for both the district and individual campuses, final results will not arrive until June.
