Submitted photo
About 300 people, obviously including the athletes, turned out April 28 for the annual Kilgore High School soccer banquet, hosted by the KHS soccer booster club. The banquet was held at the First Baptist Church's fellowship hall. Pictured are award-winners. Front row (from left): Marjorie Mitchell, Jorri Cheshire, Whitney Brown, Rebecca Howard, Suzie Espinoza, Kandace Shackelford, Sara Stewart, and Carmen Rios. Back (from left): Jose Castanon, Ryan Huckabee, Everardo Delmas, Will Estel, and Shawn Waldo. Whitney Brown was named most improved. Carmen Rios and Sara Stewart were named co-offensive MVPs, and Brown and Cheshire were named co-defensive MVPs. Marjorie Mitchell won the fighting heart award. Kandace Shackelford and Suzie Espinoza were named team MVPs, and Suzie Espinoza and Rebecca Howard won the coach's award. For the boys, Jose Castanon was named most improved. Will Estel and Garrett Fields were named cooffensive MVPs, and Everardo Delmas was named defensive MVP. Ryan Huckabee was the fighting heart award-winner, and Delmas and Estel were named team MVPs. Shawn Waldo was the coach's award-winner. Ronnie Spradlin was named outstanding booster honoree, and Marjorie Mitchell and Shawn Waldo were the Michael "Magoo" Merritt Scholarship recipients this year, the 10th year. Speaking of Merritt, one big accomplishment for the KHS boys soccer team this year was beating Brenham in the Merritt Tournament that opened the season. Brenham went on to be the runner-up in Class 4A.
