Numbers low for early voting in KISD election

Revard Pfeffer, business manager for the Kilgore Independent School District, said this morning that 367 people voted in early voting, with 11 additional provisional votes cast.

"A provisional voter is a person that is not on the voter register that feels that they are qualified to vote and votes a ballot, which will be determined to count or not count based on a review of voter information by the county election administrator," said Pfeffer.

In the last KISD trustee election, 318 people turned out for early voting. Another 290 cast their ballots on election day.

Pfeffer said some believe voter turnout for the school board elections are because people don't understand the rules for voting. "If a person is a registered voter and lives within the KISD boundaries, which includes both Gregg and Rusk Counties they are eligible to vote," said Pfeffer. "This does not just mean people who live within the Kilgore city limits."

Polls will open Saturday at 7 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. in the KISD trustee election which pits Terry George, the incumbent for Place 2, against Dale Henley. With long-time board member George Faber not running, candidates Dereck Borders and David Hedrick are seeking election to Fabear's place 1 seat.

Hedrick served on the board several years before a mid-term resignation more than two years ago.

The election will be held at Kilgore City Hall and the results will be announced at that location shortly after 7 p.m. by KISD Superintendent Jody Clements.
