UT-Tyler student stabbed on campus

TYLER (AP) - A University of Texas at Tyler student was stabbed while walking near a campus nature trail early Friday morning, campus police said.

Gabriel Sindelar, 21, was walking on a campus street about 1:30 a.m. when an unknown man came out of the woods, stabbed him and ran back into the woods. Sindelar, who suffered a non life-threatening knife wound to his lower abdomen, was taken to a nearby hospital, said university spokeswoman Beverley Golden.

Authorities said the student wasn't robbed and there was no motive for the attack.

Campus police, who searched the grounds and issued a campus crime alert to inform faculty, staff and students of the assault, continue to investigate.

About 6,150 students are enrolled at UT-Tyler.

Prior to Friday's stabbing, a home invasion that occurred in a nearby apartment complex in January triggered the most recent crime alert, according to university police.
