KC Dance Department presents their annual Spring Concert

News Herald Photo by Lester Murray Angel and Stevie (top) Baldwin-Sutton rehearse for the KC Spring Concert. The sisters are both Rangerettes, Angel a sophomore in the 67th Rangerette Line and Stevie a Freshman in the 68th Rangerette Line. Both girls are dance majors at KC and are from Round Rock. They are the daughters of Jackie and Ed Sutton.
The broad range of dance skills and talent of the Kilgore College Dance Department will be on display at the department's annual Spring Dance Concert, 8 p.m. Friday, May 2, in Van Cliburn Auditorium on the KC campus.

The concert will include ballet tap, jazz and modern dances. The performance is a collaboration of the students and instructors in the KC Dance Department, headed up by lead dance instructor Cathy Beckman.

The sophomore modern dance class will also perform a dance by guest choreographer, Ann-Marie Heilman, a former Rangerette officer and KC dance student from 1999 to 2000. Heilman continued her dance studies at Texas Christian University and is now a teacher and choreographer in Fort Worth.

Tap and jazz classes are taught by dance instructor Shelley Wayne, assistant director and choreographer of the Rangerettes. Musical selections for the concert range from Dvorak and Prokofiev to Xenakis, Led Zepplin, Jon McLaughlin, Lil' Mama and Rihanna.

The Dance Department at KC offers an intensive curriculum in ballet, modern dance, tap and jazz for the beginning student as well as those who have had more extensive dance experience. Dance at KC prepares students who wish to enter the professional world upon graduation as well as those who want to continue their studies at a four-year college as majors in Fine Arts, Physical Education or Dance Education.

The dance program includes performance courses and classes in technique and choreography that transfer to four-year universities.

Tickets are $10, $5 for students with a KC I.D. The box office will open 7 p.m. the night of the performance. For more information, contact Beckman at (903) 983-8633.
