LOCAL SPORTS IN BRIEF KHS starts regionals today The Kilgore High School tennis players who qualified for regionals were to be in action today at the University of North Texas in Denton. Coach Jason Maroney said Kilgore will have its hands full. "We are in a very tough region," Maroney said. "It is the best tennis region in Texas in any classification." His mixed doubles team - Callie Cunyus and Trevar Compton - were to play this morning at 8 against fifth-seeded Hunter Harrell and Lindsay North of Waco Midway. A win for the KHS duo meant facing either a team from McKinney North or Dallas Kimball. Kilgore's representative in girls singles competition, Haley Smith, was to play at 10:15 this morning against Arlington Seguin's Camara Davis. A win over Davis, and in all likelihood, Smith would face No. 2 seed Anastasia Zavgoroani of Richardson Pearce this afternoon. The KHS boys doubles team of Jody Madding and Josh Bailey were to play Dallas Lincoln's Keelan Boyland and Rodney Agee at 11:45 a.m. If Madding and Bailey were victorious, then they would have had to face top-seeded Blake Wiggins and Brian Bunyard of Frisco High in the second round. "The kids have a pretty tough day of tennis," Maroney noted, "but this is regionals, so it's not supposed to be easy." See results in Thursday's issue of the News Herald sports section. SOCCER Banquet Monday; book spot now The annual Kilgore High School soccer banquet will be Monday at 6:30 p.m. at the First Baptist Church's fellowship hall. Tickets are on sale at the athletic department office at the high school, and are $9 for adults and $5 for children 10 and under. The deadline to purchase tickets is this Thursday - tomorrow - in order to provide a head count to the caterer. GOLF Twenty teams signed up for Rotary tourney The annual Kilgore Rotary Golf Tournament scheduled for Monday, May 5 at Meadowbrook Country Club already has 20 teams, an official with the tournament said Tuesday, and is hoping to sign at least 10 more. The two-person tournament includes six holes of best ball (play your own ball and record the best score of the pair on the scorecard), six holes of scramble (play the better of the two shots all the way to the hole) and six holes of modified alternate shot (both players tee off and then alternate until the ball is holed). This potpourri format has been extremely popular over the past 10 or so years, making the Rotary golf tournament one that everyone wants to play. The entry fee is $75 per player or $150 per team. The fee includes lunch and drinks on the course as well as green fee and cart. Cash prizes will be paid to first, second and third place in low gross and low net categories. All players must submit a handicap when making their entry for the tournament. Lunch will be served in the dining room at 11 a.m. and tee off with a shotgun start will be at noon. For more information or to enter the tournament, contact Greg Collins at (903) 988-3413. Tournament entries will be accepted until Friday, May 2. The proceeds from the tournament go to the many Rotary Club charitable activities during the year. - BY SPORTS EDITOR MITCH LUCAS |
