The first hurdle is behind the Sabine High School softball team, and that's the UIL Class 3A bi-district playoffs.

The Lady Cardinals became 3A bi-district champions Tuesday night with a 4-0 win over Pleasant Grove at Hughes Springs. And now, coach Sarah Ricks-Creech's team will face Bullard in the second round.

The coach said this morning that the day, time and site of the Sabine-Bullard area round game has not been set. Hopefully, it will be sometime today, and can be announced in Thursday's Kilgore News Herald.

Ricks-Creech said she was impressed with her Lady Cards' performance Tuesday night. "We are definitely proud of our girls," the coach said. "They work hard at practice. We've been working on be- ing mentally tough during games , and last night they were tough."

The first five innings of the game were marked by scoreless drama, and then Sabine shattered that drama with four runs in the sixth. Two of them came on a double by Shayla Gossett.

Cortnee Ryan, Cassie Headley, Hayley Hayes and Carly Horwath each had two hits. Chelsea Headley, Lindsey Bryce and Gossett each had one.

Sandy James was tough on the mound for Sabine against PG. In seven innings pitched, James struck out 13 and walked none. Sabine's overall record this year is 13-12, and James is 13-10.

Pleasant Grove committed four errors.
