Relay for Life has successful night
By KATHRYN MARTINEZ news1@kilgorenewsherald.com

Relay for Life went off without a hitch Friday night. Hundreds turned out for the event and to take their lap to fight Cancer. Many of them stayed until dawn.

Across the country, participants in Relay for Life walk through the night as a reminder that cancer never sleeps.

Going into this weekend's event, organizers reported that five previous Relay for Life weekends raised more than $450,000 and that this year's relay should push Kilgore's American Cancer Society contribution past the $500,000 mark.

Special events were planned all night long. Participants in the nights events enjoyed many activities including silent auctions, relay games, Karaoke, midnight raffles, a short performance by local singer Teresa Roberts, bingo and much more.

Everybody who turned out had something to offer.

Kilgore Police and Fire Departments, known in the relay race as "Guns and Hoses," brought out their new safety house and command center.

Cammy Quinalty, a Connor Crusader, brought out her scissors and accepted hair donations for locks of love. Estefania Reyes, Maude Laird Middle School student, donated her hair as a tribute to Tammy Hartnell, her aunt who is in remission for the third time.

Kilgore Boys Baseball Association sold 28 pizzas, donated by Kilgore restaurants to the cause, and kept the hot chocolate coming all night long.

Relay collection totals had not been reported at press time.
