SHHS gets by Sabine
HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL
From special reports

The battle for supremacy atop the District 15-3A softball standings was a good one, but it didn't go the way the Sabine High School Lady Cardinals would have liked.

Playing at Spring Hill on Tuesday night, coach Sarah Ricks-Creech's Lady Cards slipped a little defensively, allowing three errors, and the Lady Panthers took advantage for a 7-3 win.

Sabine (11-12 overall, 6-3 in 15-3A play) will finish the regular season with Gladewater at Liberty City on Friday night, a 5:30 p.m. start.

The Lady Panthers out-hit Sabine, 12-7. Sandy James had a home run for the Lady Cardinals. Cortnee Ryan had a pair of hits, and Lindsey Bryce, Alex Easley, Janell DeFreece and Shayla Gossett had one hit each.

On the mound, James threw all seven innings. She struck out six - she has 176 strikeouts this season - and walked two. She gave up a home run to Spring Hill's Shannon Sanders in the bottom of the first inning, but settled down and pitched out of a bases-loaded jam. Kayla Williams got the win for Spring Hill, striking out 12 and walking one in six innings.

James' home run, her fifth of the year, came in the top of the second, and tied the game at 1- all. Spring Hill took a 3-1 lead, but DeFreece and Ryan came through, getting an RBI each to tie the contest again at 3. Sanders had another home run for the Lady Panthers in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Thanks to Terri James for helping provide stats for this story.
