Carol Burnett discussed at Kilgore Woman's Club The Kilgore Woman's Club held the March 28 meeting at the home of Billie Oliphant. Hostesses Billie Oliphant and Patsy Stovall provided the refreshments. President Peggy Bowne opened the meeting with the Club Collect. Ruth Ann Camp read the minutes and Carolyn Kennedy gave the Treasurer's report. Legislative report was given by Billie Oliphant. Billie's subject was the "Closing the Gaps" initiative, a program to increase college enrollment and graduation rates for all Texas high school students. Virginia Wallace gave the Civic Affairs report. The Ribbon Cutting for the Boys and Girls Club was a great success. 60 or more happy children already making good use of this facility. School buses will drop children off at the Club. Friends of the Library are having a book sale. Monday-Friday 9-6 p.m. Saturday, 9-4p.m. Hardcover $1, Paperbacks .50 cents. Magazines .10 cents. The Community Crisis Center needs canned goods. Drop off cans at the Crisis Center Office, 905 Broadway. On Tues. May 6, for one night only, Dodson Auditorium will feature Sherrill Douglas, the Patsy Cline impersonator. Tickets available April 15 at the Kilgore College Box Office. $15 and $20 dollars each. This will be a wonderful evening. Patti Cunyus reminded about the upcoming Tea, to be held at the First Christian Church Family Life Center, April 10 at 2 p.m. Bobby Hardy of Jefferson will be the featured speaker. The program was by Ruth Ann Camp. Ruth Ann chose to speak about Carol Burnett. Carol grew up in California, but was born in San Antonio. Both her parents were alcoholics and the father abandoned the family when Carol was 8 years old. She grew up with her grandmother. She enrolled in the University of California when an anonymous donor left $50 dollars in her mailbox, because there was no extra money for her tuition. In 1954 she went to New York and played in various nightclubs and did summer stock and was paid about 30 dollars a week including tips. Her first break in TV came in 1955 when she was 22. The Carol Burnett show premiered in 1967 and ran for 11 years. She continues to work and has written her autobiography entitled "One More Time-A Memoir".
